Yesterday was the third anniversary of the infamous Isla Vista shooting in California by Elliot Rodger and it brought a question in my mind;
1.) What would you do if your son expressed the homicidal ideation and narcissism that he did? Many say obviously put him on psychiatric treatment but he was over 18 and not ‘mentally incapacitated’ that would have him voluntary committed by a judge from what I’ve heard. Would you cut him of money?
2.) What would your emotional reaction be to your son carrying out an attack like he did? Anger, frustration, devastation, despair?
Well, as I remember the story, his parents DID realize that kiddo was about to do something drastic and regrettable, and were literally in their car driving to Santa Barbara in the hope of intervening somehow. Not exactly clear what they had envisioned doing if they had gotten to him in time.
Not so sure about that. IIRC, they DID have him in psychiatric therapy, rather extensively if I’m remembering it right. But he was never in such bad shape that he had to be confined to an institution.
And still, for some reason (I totally don’t recall this part of the story), his parents became alarmed at just about that time, enough so that they were heading up to S.B. right then to intervene with . . . something.
