Whatcha Watchin' on Netflix?

Anyone have any opinions or feedback about:

Friends from College
Love
Gypsy

?
Thanks

I wanted to like it, given the concept and the cast, but after 3-4 episodes I couldn’t take it anymore. It held some promise, but ultimately a couple of the characters were just too stupid/annoying for me. Friends loved it, though, so YMMV.

If you’ve not watched Black Mirror, I highly recommend it. It’s like a British Twilight Zone for the 21st Century. It’s really, REALLY good.

Love is a mixed bag. There are some genuinely funny moments and a lot to like about it, but most of the main characters are awful too much of the time. Not like in Seinfeld where they’re awful but still fun to watch, but like “I would not be their friend IRL” awkward cringe way. But it wasn’t so awful I didn’t watch season 2.

I recommend it with the caveat it’s probably not going to be anyone’s favorite.

Just finished episode 1 of Ozark. Very good, will continue watching. Recommended if you like Breaking Bad and True Detective type shows.

I second Misnomer’s thoughts on Friends from College (also didn’t finish) and Fair Rarity’s thoughts on *Love *(don’t remember if i even finished season 2)

I see **Happy **is watching *Flaked *but I couldn’t stand it. I did watch all of season 1 but I was genuinely mad when I was finished and mad again when I saw there was a season 2. That show is slightly worse than Love, and turned me off of Will Arnett.

I just finished Ozark. It was ok, I feel drawn in by Jason Bateman. It was definitely a shortened Breaking Bad on a lake. I was up and down caring about it as I watched it but I’ll probably check out season 2.

Anyone watch Chewing Gum? It’s really delightful. It’s a less-serious, British Insecure (which is on HBO). It’s about a 20-something black woman who is both sheltered and daring, and also super goofy. It’s hard to explain, but I’d love some feedback from others who have watched (or will watch) it.

I really liked Gypsy. Kinda like if you gave Nurse Jackie a really mean streak and made her a therapist.

Seconds on Happy Valley. Reminded me a bit of the Killing, which I also enjoyed a lot.

No one has mentioned Wentworth - Australia’s version of OITNB, but without the humor. Has a great really, really evil Warden you can anxiously root to come to a happy demise.

I was also intrigued by The OA, even though it is probably the most peculiar series I’ve ever watched. It held my interest.

I just finished watching Crazyhead. It’s reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, about Any, a young woman working in a bowling alley who begins to see visions; she runs into Raquel, who explains they both are demon hunters, and get involved in the machination of the demons trying to possess humans. It’s written by Howard Overman, creator of * Misfits* ( the best superhero show ever). It’s not as groundbreaking, but has smart dialog and great characters. Susie Wakoma is absolutely terrific as Raquel and there are some nice sidenotes, like the demon who has possessed a single mother and has to juggle babysitting and stealing souls.

The show only ran six episodes, but the story arc is complete.

The best thing I have seen in AGES is Elizabeth at 90, a collection of the royal family’s home movies, with them all sitting around the big screen TV and commenting on them, just like any other family in the world would. It was absolutely delightful, and I highly recommend it!

I feel the need to second this. It’s amazingly good. There are a few clinkers but most episodes are excellent.

It really makes you think about where technology may be taking us.

Anyone know if they’re doing a fourth season?

If I’d stumbled on the thread earlier, I might have mentioned Danger 5, an excellent spoof of all those super duper secret agent soldier stories from the second world war.

It’s gone for a few weeks now in the UK, but maybe it might be available elsewhere in the world.

I recommend Crazyhead, which was mentioned upthread, Only 6 episodes, but it’s well acted, well written, and definitely has a Buffy-like flavor.

I just added both Elizabeth at 90 and Crazyhead to my queue. Thanks, PapSett and RealityChuck (and kiz)!

I love that show, if you like Archer and Austin Powers you’d probably like Danger 5.
I watched Lucky Number Slevin last night. Great movie with a great cast (Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman.) Sort of a crime drama/comedy/romance/big caper movie. Had some great plot twists.

Has anyone else watched **The Incredible Jessica James starring the former ** Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams and Chris O’Dowd? A small rom-com. Fun but nothing amazing.

Finished Season 2 of Master of None. Ditto that the ep with minorities was awesome and hilarious.

Why did Asiz Ansari have to become the broken romantic icon at the end? I want him to be the fun party guy.

Hey, heck this out! David Letterman is coming to Netflix for a new series!

I started it because I love both of them. But I didn’t finish cuz I quickly got bored with it.

While I generally don’t enjoy movies and shows about dating anyway, I like “Chewing Gum” and “Insecure” and “Fleabag” and “Master of None.” Those seem to have more teeth than this did.

Kind of disappointed that this is the best thing a person with Williams’ talent came up with.

I just finished all three seasons of Zoo. The premise was interesting and the pace kept my attention. But the writing was not great, except for the occasional meta reference to its own failings. The writers were clearly aware of the problems, such as no crew on the plane other than the pilot, but everything gets magically cleaned up after getting destroyed. Ugh. So many continuity problems, really bad science, magical timelines and ability to travel instantaneously, inexplicable behavior that creates tension, etc. ad infinitum. Usually I’d give up on dreck such as this, but it kept me entertained. The third season really sucked though and I’m not even disappointed that it got cancelled.

I’m on Big Mouth now. Very funny and unexpected. I have a teenage daughter and I haven’t laughed that hard in a while.

I’m wrapping up the last season of **Penny Dreadful **and then I’ll start on Stranger Things season two. I’ll also likely re-watch the Babysitter, a fun horror-comedy they released this month.
