Yeah, there are a million of them, but I’ve found web hosting companies to tend towards the unreliable and unprofessional. Therefore, I’m just looking for some personal experiences and/or recommendations. I’m going to be doing a basic personal website, of the type we’re all familiar with; no massive bandwidth usage or anything like that. I’d prefer some good hands-on access (meaning, preferably, that I can telnet or ssh into the account, and I should be able to upload files using FTP and such). *NIX is preferable to Windows, simply because its what im familiar with when it comes to servers.
The key, though, is price. As a poor bastard, I can’t commit more than a few dollars a month to this, at least at the moment. I’ve seen countless hosts advertised for $5 or so a month, but again, I’m wary of dealing with hosting companies, so I haven’t just signed on with the first one I’ve seen.
I’ve gone the free hosting route before, but I’d rather spend a little each month than subject any visitors to advertising (unless I’m getting the ad-revenue, that is), hence my wanting an actual paid webhost.
I know, could I pick a more boring topic? My apologies in advance, but I feel like I could get some good advice here. Thanks for any and all en-foh-mation.
