I got many of the songs in one go from a friend at work. Trouble is it is only on doing this that I’ve found out his taste in music is 90% shit.
I want to be able to delete songs I don’t like, when I hear them.
In WM player it’s a nightmare. First you have to scroll the list for the currently playing song (which in itself takes time when there’s thousands of files), then right click, then ‘open file location’.
And if you try to delete it it will say permission denied so you’ve got to go back to WM player and move to the next song, then delete the file.
When you get a run of bad files the above sequence of steps is just not practical. I want to be able to press a ‘delete this song from your computer’ button, or even better - just press the delete key on the keyboard.
So either I am missing some better way of doing this in WM player, or I need to start using a better media player.
edit: It’s worse when the music is supposed to be on for ambience and you’re trying to do something else. Your productivity is slowed because every two minutes you’re going back to the player and either click click clicking for a good song, or faffing about to delete one song (only to find that the next 8 are shit too so you’re either deleting them or wasting time ‘nexting’) This happened while I was typing this thread.
I’ve done that, but it’s not ideal: I’m playing in shuffle, so on the right is the list of tracks shuffled. I can’t delete them in the list on the right so I have to click ‘find in library’ then go to the middle list and delete it there.
And if I’ve been playing for a while, there’s another delay when scrolling the list on the right to find the currently playing song.
MediaMonkey, available in a free version, does this pretty easily. There’s an automatic playlist which selects all tracks in the library. Cue this to play, with shuffle enabled. One of the views available from the main screen is “Playing.” This jumps around the playlist to the track currently being played. From there, it’s easy to delete the track from both the MM library and the computer. Don’t recall whether you have to stop the player to do the delete (this doesn’t come up often for me, as I assembled my library myself), but don’t think so. In any event, restarting play is easy.
FWIW, I did a lot of research before selecting a player, having decided I didn’t care for the Windows player. One of the MM features mentioned in most reviews was its ease of library management. So far (I’ve only had it about six months) that seems to be mostly true. The one thing it’s a bit flaky about is moving tracks from one subdirectory to another, for which I’ve taken to using Windows Explorer instead. Happily, MM is very good about noticing the moves and modifying its library accordingly. Incidentally, you wouldn’t have to reenter your library if you move to MM. It has a function which enables it to search a designated directory and construct the library.
Looks Good. I’ll give MM a try when I get home.
I don’t mind about moving tracks around. My folder structure is lazy anyway. If I did have a need to move tracks I’d be using windows explorer anyway, so that won’t be a problem,.
