What's a good second job?

I have the coolest job in the world and I’m not looking to change that. But somewhere along the way I contracted a dose of work-ethic and while my soul rebels my Scottish Protestant upbringing appears to be winning when it comes to the choice between sitting around skiving or earning more money.

le sigh

I’m not looking for a huge cash reward but neither am I willing to slave away for peanuts. Due to the vagaries of my shift pattern it’s also going to have to be something I can do whenever I like and be home/internet-based. I’m fairly intelligent and can turn my hand to most things - and if not I can learn. So what would be an interesting second job?

It’s a toss up which comes first and which comes second:

hand job

blow job

take your pick.

I know I’ve criticized it in the past, but receptionist work is generally good and there’s usually work availible at odd hours of the day where noone else wants to work  Also, there’s really not a lot of required education for most jobs like that, so they usually take people on character

Sadly my shifts change around a lot so receptionist and hooker are both doubtful choices.

I have education coming out my ass so conceivably I could aim a little higher - just looking for a fun lil job to do on the side and the dodgy DVDs market already appears to be covered.

I’m not sure what you could do from home other than perhaps transcription of some sort. The pay *can * be good, if you’re an excellent typist, but IMO probably not enough to make it worthwhile. I suppose you could try to set up some sort of an ebay business, but I think that requires more time than you’re willing to invest. Perhaps I’m suffering a failure of imagination here, but I think that if there were truly an easy way to make money on the internet or at home, most people would be doing it.

Bartending can be an excellent second job. Great money, and fun (most of the time) as well.

I can’t really take a job outside the home. My real job precludes that due to the hours I work and the variability of the shifts.

Also, I’m not looking for a get-rich-quick. My first job pays me comfortably enough. Basically I’m looking for something to give me a bit of pocket money. I’d thought about an ebay business making jewellery but I guess also the transcription idea might work. Thanks.

Just a quick FYI- I do medical transcription as a full time job, and for anyone considering that, I’d say this: If you don’t have a strong medical background and excellent computer skills, you may find the training required will not earn you the money you want to make. It took me a good solid 3 months of full time work to learn enough to make the money I do now (which is quite good) and I have a solid medical background and excellent computer skills. It’s not the sort of thing where a reputable company will just say “Oh, you can type? OK, type this up!” There’s quite a lot to learning the ropes in that particular job is all I"m saying.

Agreed. I have a friend who does it, and she says (and I think I remember reading something similar here, for that matter. Maybe it was you, BoBettie!) that if you don’t have a medical background you’ll spend the majority of your time looking up words. Also, if you have any trouble understanding accents, forget it.

Package delivery. Don’t know if they have independent companies on your side of the pond but you can check into it. You’d be using your own vehicle to do on-demand deliveries. You could do this whenever you want.

Internet companies are infinite in scope and should reflect skills you already have that are not sustainable locally but would work in a larger market.

Have you considered tutoring? You could put that extensive education to work helping others on a very flexible schedule. I tutored math and physics while in college several years ago for $15-20 an hour: the rates can only have gone up.

I agree with illoe. When I was at uni I did maths coaching. It paid well and required very little effort. Is there something like that you could do?

Donate plasma? I consider it my second job. Go twice a week, takes about 2 hours each time, get $55. Easy extra $200 a month.

There was a thread awhile back where someone mentioned a couple companies that needed people to grade exams.

My search isn’t finding the thread. Does anybody remember it? It was also someone who was looking for something they could do from home to make a buck or two.

I think tutoring and package delivery might be out if the only time I happen to be free is the middle of the night. D’oh what am I saying! Of course tutoring would work. Whoever heard of a student being awake in the morning!

I think payment for body parts is illegal but thanks for the suggestion anyway!

Night watchman would be nice. A lousy job by itself, but still doable after a more active job.

Babysitting. It pays well and there’s always someone who needs someone to watch their kids.

Phone sex operator. Or perhaps buying crap at thrift stores and selling it on eBay for a profit. With an odd schedule and the inabliity to really leave the house you don’t have too much option unfortunately.

Late shift desk clerk in a hotel? Maybe you can read or do something else to amuse yourself when business is slow.

I am not referring to Post #2.
