I heard somewhere that some cocktails are considered “summer drinks” and some are considered winter drinks.
I usually drink a gin and tonic or a tom collins, but as I understand it these are usually considered summer drinks. So now that fall is here, I’m thinking I need to have a good winter drink. The thing is, I almost always drink clear spirits. I kind of hate the taste of whiskey actually (or whisky, or however the *&@# you spell it).
Is there a “winter drink” that is made with vodka or gin?
There are some nice hot drinks–Mexican coffee (has tequila & Kahlua), coffee & Baileys. Someone recommended hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps to me once. Sounded good, tasted like warm Pepto Bismo, euck. I think of cognac as a winter drink and it has a definite warming effect. (Well actually all alcoholic drinks truly have a chilling effect, St. Bernards with flasks around their necks to the contrary. But at least there is the illusion of warmth.)
Allow me to just drop in and say I’m getting married in october, and we ordered a cask of cider for the wedding. Warmed up, it’s going to be great! little Buttered Rum and we’ll be set.
I like hot chocolate with a slug of butterscotch schnapps in it. There’s also a new toffee liqueur called Dooley’s. They have some recipes at their website that might work. (I think it’s www.letsdooleys.com )
How’s about a Brandy Alexander for those cold evenings - 4 parts brandy, 1 part creme de cacao, 1 part double cream (works well as an after dinner one too)
If you want to stick with vodka then why not do a ‘fruits of the season’ martini - takes you all through the year and they’re fun to make. Strawberries, melon, kiwi, grape or blackberries muddled in a shaker with shots of vodka and a slug of sugar syrup (gomme). If you have like flavoured spirits (midori, cassis, creme de mure) chuck a little of that in too (sounds refined hey?). They all taste good and have lots of vitamins to keep colds away.
Nothing like snuggling up with the paper, by a fire, drinking an Oatmeal Cookie. (Equal parts Bailey’s Irish and Goldschlager served over ice in a low ball). MM MM Good.
There’s a really great Russian place near me that serves what they call “Marucya Gold”. It’s champagne with homemade cherry Vodka. MIGHTY TASTY.
My hairdresser was just saying that she loves to sip Grand Marnier in the winter, b/c it warms her up. It’s an orangey flavor, supposed to be very good, though I’ve never had it.
