What's a good winter cocktail?

I heard somewhere that some cocktails are considered “summer drinks” and some are considered winter drinks.

I usually drink a gin and tonic or a tom collins, but as I understand it these are usually considered summer drinks. So now that fall is here, I’m thinking I need to have a good winter drink. The thing is, I almost always drink clear spirits. I kind of hate the taste of whiskey actually (or whisky, or however the *&@# you spell it).

Is there a “winter drink” that is made with vodka or gin?

I used to drink hot buttered rum. Maybe you could substitute the gin or other.

There are some nice hot drinks–Mexican coffee (has tequila & Kahlua), coffee & Baileys. Someone recommended hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps to me once. Sounded good, tasted like warm Pepto Bismo, euck. I think of cognac as a winter drink and it has a definite warming effect. (Well actually all alcoholic drinks truly have a chilling effect, St. Bernards with flasks around their necks to the contrary. But at least there is the illusion of warmth.)

Being a New Englander, and someone who likes to cozy up next to my fire place with a warm drink here are some recommendations.

Hot Apple Cider with Rum, preferably Captain Morgan or Myers Dark.

Mulled cider plain.

Coffee Baileys Frangelico

Coffee with Godiva choc, Disarrano (Sp?) Amaretto…very very decadant but probably not something you’d want to drink alot of.

Hot Buttered Rum is awesome- you can make your mix or buy it at the store (Tom & Jerry type)

No one has mentioned White/Black Russians? Cold drink but heavy/sweet- good for winter.

Anything with vodka- remember its a russian booze …

A nice Hot Toddy is the cure for the common cold

2 for a bad cold, more than 3 and you’re defeating the purpose, but what the hell?

I’ll second the nomination for White Russians. I also enjoy a nice dark beer in the fall.

Allow me to just drop in and say I’m getting married in october, and we ordered a cask of cider for the wedding. Warmed up, it’s going to be great! little Buttered Rum and we’ll be set.

I like hot chocolate with a slug of butterscotch schnapps in it. There’s also a new toffee liqueur called Dooley’s. They have some recipes at their website that might work. (I think it’s www.letsdooleys.com )

Not clear spirits, but try it, you might like it…

Coffee Nudge

1 shot each brandy, kahlua, creme de cocoa in a mug
fill with coffee, top with whipped cream and colored sugar sprinkles.

How’s about a Brandy Alexander for those cold evenings - 4 parts brandy, 1 part creme de cacao, 1 part double cream (works well as an after dinner one too)

If you want to stick with vodka then why not do a ‘fruits of the season’ martini - takes you all through the year and they’re fun to make. Strawberries, melon, kiwi, grape or blackberries muddled in a shaker with shots of vodka and a slug of sugar syrup (gomme). If you have like flavoured spirits (midori, cassis, creme de mure) chuck a little of that in too (sounds refined hey?). They all taste good and have lots of vitamins to keep colds away.

Thank you nurse…hic

Nothing like snuggling up with the paper, by a fire, drinking an Oatmeal Cookie. (Equal parts Bailey’s Irish and Goldschlager served over ice in a low ball). MM MM Good.

There’s a really great Russian place near me that serves what they call “Marucya Gold”. It’s champagne with homemade cherry Vodka. MIGHTY TASTY.

My hairdresser was just saying that she loves to sip Grand Marnier in the winter, b/c it warms her up. It’s an orangey flavor, supposed to be very good, though I’ve never had it.

You just can not beat hot buttered rum on a cold winter’s evening.

I also don’t think you should up your G & Ts. Try using clementine or kumquat instead of lime.
