What's a kid to do in NYC?

I’m taking a little 3-day vacation to NYC in October. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite a while (haven’t been there in more than 10 years), and I finally have nothing to do and a little money to burn over fall break.

Basically, my only plans at this point are to wander around all the neighborhoods and admire the bizarre and fantastic spectacle that is NYC. I’m not really interested in touristy stuff. That said, can any of you New Yorkers tell me about stuff that I shouldn’t miss? I know there’s a nearly endless supply of interesting things to do, but since I’m only going to be there a few days I need a somewhat coherent idea of where to have the most fun.

Also, I will be eternally greatful to anyone who can point me towards some good, cheap restaurants (esp. ethnic food). Remember, you’re talking to a poor college student

I’ve done this before. See my many posts in this thread also asking for NYC vacation ideas:

Some of my suggestions are not exactly the thrill-a-minute variety, but a lot of them will take you off the beaten tourist path. Good luck, and feel free to ask more specific Q’s about your trip.

Thanks, stuyguy. It’ll take me a while to chew on that thread, but it looks pretty juicy.

Since you mention theater in your profile… I’m not a big fan of Broadway-type musical theater, but I’m sure there’s a lot of other great stuff to be seen. Any recommendations?

Bob - when you get here, buy a Time Out New York magazine. It’s a weekly guide to entertainment in NYC. It’s very comprehensive, is chock full of film, theater, music, restaurants, art happenings and I think it’s just what you need. I think it’s hard to suggest things, if we don’t really know what you’re into. You can buy one pretty much everywhere.

Before I had a subscription, I would buy a copy, go to a bar or cafe and read the thing. Then I would have a million ideas of things to do and be busy the entire week.

Have fun!

You should spend large amounts of cash in many of our fine establishments. The tip jar is there on your right, thank you, and come back soon.
