What's going on with the hamburger menu? {May 25, 2023}

‘Unread’ a thread you are subscribed to that has new posts.
‘New’ threads that you haven’t opened (subject to user defined time limits).

click the hamburger menu to get “everything”
Then toggle to “new”

If that doesn’t work, look at my post above about setting options, especially

  • Under navigation I chose “link to unread/new and show a count of items”. After I saved this put a toggle on the left of my phone screen that lets me toggle among “categories”, “New(#)”, “Latest (#)”, “Top”, and “Unread (#)”

My ‘everything’ button takes me to “new”.

I wish I could still use the burger to go straight to unread if anyone figures out a way to do that. I guess two clicks to get to unread isn’t the end of the world though.

It’s been explained already in this thread.

  1. Go to your profile page.
  2. Select the preferences (gear) menu item.
  3. Select the “Sidebar” (hamburger) menu item.
  4. Under the Navigation choice select “Link to unread/new and show a count of new items”.
  5. Click [Save Changes] at the bottom.

Done. Now under every page’s hamburger menu, the “Everything” item leads to Unread/New, not to Latest.

:man_facepalming: So it does!

I just didn’t have anything unread the last time I tried apparently.

I would prefer “Unread” and “New” to be two separate options. Sometimes I want to just see my unread posts, sometimes I want to see new posts. I typically don’t want to see them all lumped together. I hope the software goes back to the old way where they was a separate button for each.

If you switch to one, you should see choices for the others at the top of the page. Not as easy as it used to be, but only two clicks.

Why someone thought anniversaries was more important to have easy access to than “unread posts” is beyond me.

This might be the thought process: “If we take Anniversaries and Birthdays off the menu, no one will ever look for them and know they’re there.”

Maybe or who knows?

Wait! Are you folks seriously saying the very first thing you look at when you log on isn’t Anniversaries and Birthdays???

I usually start with the overnight spammers. That could be made easier, maybe I should submit a help ticket.

BTW: From the Modloop, Ed & I were troubleshooting the new “feature”. It is acting oddly and Ed bumped it up to a Tech and then on to Discourse.

I just added a Shortcuts section to the hamburger dropdown menu - it has links to “new posts” and “unread posts.” Hope y’all find this convenient.

I think What_Exit may have already mentioned this, but you can create your own custom section (visible to you only) by clicking on the plus sign at lower right in the hamburger dropdown menu. This opens an “add custom section” dialogue box. From there it’s pretty obvious.

Every year on the day before my birthday, I get a text message from my bank here in Beijing:

November 20th is your birthday.

Maybe Discourse is outsourcing now.

The bank does send me another message shortly (sometimes around three hours later) thanking me for using their services and hoping I will enjoy the day. Personally, I’d’ve put the two messages together, or at least worded the first one a bit better. :joy:

Thanks!

Yes, thank you, Ed. You’ve made these changes much more palatable!

Thanks much, I appreciate the time you spent doing this.

Agreed. Good job, @Ed_Zotti !

Since most of the serious issues have been addressed, I’ll bring up the obvious.

No one, not ONE of us, said we need “Hamburger Helper” to fix our menu?

Seriously, thanks for the help. By the time I logged in on my computer the hamburger already had the new / latest / unread options which is mostly what I use, and I was able to follow the instructions provided here to clear up the categories. So by standing on the shoulders of giants I was able to recover quickly.

The way it works, the “Everything” option is a "smart option. It does one of two things:

  1. If you have unread items, it goes to the Unread page.
  2. If you don’t have unread items, it goes to the New page.

In either case, the Unread and New pages are the same as they ever were, with a nav bar at the top with simple links to take you to Unread, New, Latest, Top, or the Categories page.

Love the improvements thanks! And the tag list has really expanded, I’m using it more than I thought I would.
Can you explain the custom selection bit,
What is it used for, I checked it out but not sure what I’m trying to do with it?
