What's gotten you worked up this month? (May 2024 mini-rants)

We have a kickass cyborg among us!

.

Seriously, I’m glad you’re able to “fix” yourself.

Thanks. My right side therapy is up and running again. The face-tingle is much stronger as therapy is restored.

My gf LOVES home remodeling projects. She researches, gets estimates, researches some more, secures finances, etc. I stay out of the way.

When she tackled the kitchen and her master bath, I stayed blissfully ignorant. But the contractor would ignore my gf, instead hunting me down to ask questions. Of course I never knew any of the answers.

Now, she is having a small porch turned into a moderate sized deck and getting a new roof. It is a big job and everything’s a mess. The contractor (a new guy) has a dump truck, a van filled with tools, and a pickup truck with ladders permanently parked where the vehicles are in the way. My Jeep is parked 200 yards from the house, by the barn.

Yesterday I was walking Simi from my Jeep to the house, carrying groceries. The contractor came flying up the lane, driving faster than I’ve ever seen anyone drive on the gravel drive. Scared the fuck out of Simi, who tore away, dragging his leash behind him.

I took the groceries in, then found Simi and calmed him down. I walked down to my Jeep to get a few more things and the contractor apologized for scaring the dog. I told him he scared me as well and he should SLOW THE FUCK DOWN. This was the first time we ever met/spoke. Man, I hate this.

Good news…my son was able to contact his university IT admin, and they reinstated his account for another month (until the end of May) so he can transfer everything out. And the email forwarding appears to be working as well.

Apparently this whole kerfluffle is because Google reportedly stopped offering free and unlimited data storage to educational institutions and moved to a fee model in which the cost is determined by the total amount of storage used. So his university is ditching Google Workspace and moving to Microsoft 365. One reason they give for going with Microsoft 365 is that Microsoft meets their security requirements for data storage (and supposedly Google does not).

I just checked my own alumni account which is also a Google account (at a different institution), but don’t see any notices that they are getting rid of it.

Mine (Berkeley) is… they promised “forever” but added lots of strings this year.

Well, I wondered what an old acquaintance was up to. She had visited me and my son about 12 years ago, and helped me financially. She was eclectic.
I googled her name , which is an unusual name and it seems she is or was a neo Nazi, who took part in Charlottesville, and lost her job because of that. Wow.

For about the 20th time, I’ve picked a horse to be the winner of this horse race.

For about the 20th time, I’ve never bet a nickel to back it up.

Once you bet, the horse will lose. The Committee will see to it.

That “Committee”? Its whole family needs to be thinned out with a ‘Duck Hunt’.

“What do you mean duck isn’t spelled with an ‘F’…?”

Cell phone revenge. Most people of a certain age hate people who can’t tear their eyes away from the tiny screen for even a minute. Yesterday, one of the younger aides that works here got on the elevator with me and didn’t punch a floor button, her attention completely absorbed by whatever she was looking at on her phone. Couldn’t even be bothered to give an unfelt “hello” or to even look up to see if I was a serial killer.

Rather than ask her what floor she wanted to get off on, which was likely the lobby, I just allowed the car to carry me to the basement, where the parking garage is. When the door opened, she looked up, looked confused, then gave me an exasperated look like it was my fault. I exited without a backward glance.

I’m not exactly worked up about it, but it’s a peeve that is bothering me.

My school switched to Microsoft 365 for this very reason. They said the fee to continue to use Google as they had been would cost $18K per month. Take that with whatever size grain of salt you wish.

So now we use Microsoft 365.

South Eastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority or Septa is what happens when incompetence marries corruption. I know the route in my new neighborhood is unreliable on Sundays. I know it’s unreliable after 9 pm. I thought I was safe. Whilst I was waiting for my bus home, I checked Septa’s website. From what I could tell (Septa’s site was recently updated to be less userfriendly and helpful) I was good. After waiting about 40 minutes, I checked the Maps app on my iPhone. Even though it was set to Transit, it recommended I walk home. Then, my GF called. I told her of my plight. She did her Google magic (She works in Search Engine Optimization. Her Google Fu is fantastic). She told me I needed to call Uber or Lyft. Uber was $30 and up. This seemed high as the map app said my appartment was less than a mile away (I had considered walking. It was dropping into the 40’s and raining. I had a big granny cart heavy with groceries. My new neighborhood is not a safe one.) I decided to try Lyft. Lyft started at $7. The drive was quick and pleasant.

I also forgot that pharmacies close early on weekends. I will miss my dose of Qelbree tonight and be late on my Vraylar tomorrow morning. I felt stupid and angry for a bit. But, I can go back tomorrow.

My anger at Septa remains furious. You’re riding Septa- Bend over and take it!

Before May 4th ends, I want to remember the 4 victims at Kent State.

I’m jealous that your pharmacy is open on the weekends. Mine is only open 9a-6p M-F. I rarely get off work before 4pm and with my hour long commute sometimes I simply can’t make it to the pharmacy before it closes. Which is I guess is my mini-rant: I wish my pharmacy was open at least a few hours on Saturdays. Would make my life easier.

/firstworldproblem

Jesus! That sounds more like a third-world problem! Stores in the US (I presume that’s where you are) tend to be open pretty much forever compared to here in the Socialist Workers’ Paradise of Canuckstan™, but even here pharmacies are open 7 days a week and also on many holidays when most stores are closed, and AFAIK when they’re open, there’s always a certified pharmacist on duty who can fill prescriptions.

I was flipping the channels yesterday and I stopped on CNN. To my surprise, Bill Maher’s show was playing! It was a particularly ignorant right-wing show, with mother-of-the-year loud mouth Kellyanne Conway as one of the guests. As usual, she was trying to over-talk everyone and spout the typical Rump lies… but not on HBO. On CNN!!!

Wow, CNN has sunk lower than whale sh-t…

I wish I hadn’t eaten that entire bag of potato chips. (It was a small bag, but I was already full.)

For a while CNN was just airing the short post-show “Overtime” sequences, which normally were posted to YouTube. But they’re now airing repeats of the full HBO Friday shows on Saturday nights.

FTR, the show is not “a particularly ignorant right-wing show”, but actually pretty balanced, though infused with a couple of Maher’s personal eccentricities like vaccine hesitancy, an archaic view of medical science in general, and anti-Muslim sentiment. Otherwise he’s generally pretty liberal but occasionally has crackpot guests like Conway, RFK Jr, and once even the insane bigot Milo Yiannopoulos.

But guests like that are pretty rare; much more often, Maher has guests like former Obama administration cabinet members and thoughtful pundits, writers, and other important influencers. The show has won an impressive series of Emmy awards over the years. We have a whole thread about Maher controversies here in the Pit.

Yeah…No.

I’m guessing that he needs fists full of cash to rebuild his Hawaii Pot Ranch.
Now, is rebuilding the HI Pot Strain bad for the world…? Hard for me to say.

But Bill Maher, bent over and taking a Right Wing Pounding, is not something that should ever be called “News”.

It’s been a super-busy week- the latest in a string of super-busy weeks (I mean, the event I had sorta thought I might get a little tiny break after was… a month ago. And I have not had that break).

I did finally, finally get a day off today. Just one, though. I had to work a 14-hour day yesterday and my work week starts anew tomorrow. This week will feature a 24-hour event (I don’t have to be fully engaged for the full 24 hours, but I do have to be paying attention) and the lead-up to it, plus an extra day filling in for someone who is on vacation.
So it was pretty important that I somehow both get maximum rest today and use it as much as possible to prepare for the week ahead.

… Instead, I woke up feeling like I’d been hit by a truck and stayed that way all day. I did at least get laundry and dishes done. I feel 0% rested about 3% prepared for the week.
