What's happenin' in Atlanta?

Well folks, UncleBeer, like William Tecumseh Sherman, has decided to conquer Atlanta. It was inevitable; there are just too many similarities between the two of us. We’re both Ohio natives. We were both born in February. Both of our last names begin with the letter “S.” We’ve both been to Chattanooga. We’re both crazy as shithouse rats, at least, according to our peers. And I too, if nominated, will not run.

Anyway, I’m gonna be in Atlanta, well not really Atlanta, but Suwanee, for software training on Focus Broadband Designer beginning Monday, August 21 and ending Friday, August 25. Right now, I believe all of my evenings are free. If anyone would like to get together for dinner and/or drinks some evening, this would be the place to speak up.

The timing of this could not have worked out better for me. Since I was planning to attend the Norfolk Dopefest on Saturday, August 26, I’m going to drive to Atlanta and stop in Norfolk on the way back. Neato, eh?

Mmmmmmmmmmm. What could be more…hospitable…than the city of Atlanta in the month of August?

I’ll speak up.

Any night except for Tuesday (if at all possible) is good for me.

Also, Suwanee is on my side of town. Location will depend on whether you want some of that downtwon Atlanta nightlife kinda flavor or if a resteraunt/bar in the suburbs will do just as nicely.

I hear ya, Uke, but I once went to New Orlens in August by choice, so I think I can handle the heat.

Excellent Uncle, I live and work about 2 minutes from Suwanee, so we could do a Tuesday, if that’s okay with you. E-mail me at chrisp@fenestrae-usa.com. I get off of work at 5:30 and it would take me about 30-40 minutes to get to suwanee.

UncleBeer:

All I can say is, St. Louis 7:40 PM Turner Field Fri. Aug 25. St. Louis 7:40 PM WTBS Turner Field.

In other words, go to a Braves game. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/schedule?team=atl&date=20000801 and http://www.atlantabraves.com

Wish I could go with you.

Care to elaborate on that?

Are you specifically trying to exclude me (with the Tuesday night deal), CPOK? :frowning:

I’m an idiot. Let me 'splain…
I can take Peachtree Industrial north to get to Suwanee, when there is no traffic. After work it takes 30-40 minutes to get to Suwanne if I take McGuiness Ferry. I only said 2 minutes to show that I live VERY close. Not literally 2 minutes. The Tuesday night is a night that my wife works, but Thurs would work as well. I would actually like to get together with more dopers. Check out my Dopers in ATL, Deja vu? thread. How about Thursday then. I’m always looking for something to do on Thursday nights as well. I just didn’t see your post about Tues.

Sorry. I meant no hostility.

None taken, dude…just kidding (mostly) with the martyr role.

Thursday would work well for me, too.

and re: Dopers in ATL, Deja vu? thread–This sounds like more my cup of tea, or more accurately, my cup of beer. Not to say I won’t attend the other, but the idea of meeting for dinner and drinks sounds more enticing to me than does an afternoon BBQ. I know, I know–My social side should outweigh my alcoholic side, but most times it doesn’t. What can I say?

UncleBeer, I grew up in Suwanee. It has grown a lot since I moved away. Wish I could meet up with you guys, but since I can’t, I’ll just offer some suggestions for some places to eat right by the Suwanee exit off of I-85:

Waffle House
the other Waffle House
the third Waffle House (wait, that one closed)
McDonald’s
Wendy’s
Cracker Barrel
Justin’s
Denny’s
the hybrid Del Taco/chicken (can’t remember the name) restaurant

Ummm, maybe you should go somewhere else to eat.

Back in my day there was only a Waffle House, a Waffle House, a Waffle House, a Denny’s, Justin’s and Wendy’s there.

Let’s try for thurs. then. Let’s talk about a time.

Unc…no kidding! I’ve done the N’Awlins thing in July, myself; had a couple of business trips down there over the years, and I guess hotel rooms run at 1/8 the regular rate between May and September, because you’d have to be about half out of your mind to go there in those months.

I found that the key to survival is to turn the dial WAY down on the ol’ metabolism, and move at about one-quarter the pace you’d keep up north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Loose, light-colored cotton clothing. And {chortle} make sure to drink PLENTY of fluids!

Definately go to Braves-Cards game. Take some sort of banner or placard with a ‘Go SDMB’ on it. Wave it wildly, as if it were on fire, as to get the attention of the camera men. I’ll be watching from west coast. Make us proud.

As much as I would like to meet the legendary Uncle Beer, I am afraid I will not likely make this event.

I will watch for the final details and maybe I can work something out.

Jeffery

Hey, Unc! A get together sounds like fun. Thursday evening looks good for me. I could get to the Suwanee area by about 7:00 pm.

It ain’t the heat, Unc, it’s the humanity.

Of course, you’re right about Atlanta in August, though the altitude helps a bit – at least it’s not Augusta or Valdosta.

I remember when they announced that the 96 Olympics were going to be in Atlanta in July-August, I wondered how many world class athletes would end up dead or disabled. As it was, they had to put a lot of thought and effort into transportation of the athletes (particularly in track and field events), since the athletes warmed up at separate facilities, and they were then bussed to the Olympic Stadium. They were worried about them warming up in the heat, getting on an air conditioned bus, then back out into the heat at the venue.

What I loved about working a trade show in NO in July was how the outside temp was around 95 with high humidity, and the interior of the Morial Convention Center was refrigerated to about 55. There was absolutely no way one could dress so as not to swelter on the way to the show and then freeze your crawdads off on the show floor. The lousy attendance made it even worse: four days of standing around in summer clothes in arctic temps staring at the guys in the booth across the aisle, who were staring right back at you.

Thursday sounds fine to me. I’ll post more of my itinerary as I get it. If anybody sees Mullinator, send him this way.

Let’s come up with a place then kids. 7 is good for me too.

Well. I see that SOMEBODY has a crush.

– Uke, jealous

Okay, pally, just what sort of trade show were YOU at? I may have been the guy across the aisle. And I’ll thank you to dress sluttier next time.
