What's happening?

We’ve turned the corner all right, the problem was that the sign read “ROAD CLOSED”.

Now that you’ve registered your opinion, we can all finally get some sleep. Thank you.

Is anyone else having strange problems when creating a post? My delete button does nothing. I have to position the cursor and backspace. I also can not CNTRL-V to paste. I have to right click on the mouse to bring up the drop down and then paste.

It is not my keyboard or computer. It works everywhere else.

Weird.

Strange problems?

There is currently a thread in the BBQ pit which stalls my computer, freezes it, cannot scroll down, cannot close window. (Only on this site am I experiencing any difficulties!)

Yesterday I opened a thread, and when I attempted to scroll down, my screen split in the center and the right side stayed static, while the left half scrolled away.

As amusing as I find it all, I think I’m done.

Seriously, I think the silence our complaints have been met with speaks volumes. I (and I’m not alone) sent an email directly to the CEO of creative loafing and have received the same stoney silence, in response that we have met with here. Truly, not even a standard auto response saying “we received your email…yada, yada, yada.”

I’m bone weary of the, “We don’t know nothing”, response from people who should know something.

In my opinion CL does not now, nor did they ever, give a rats ass about this board. I think the board was the toy prize in the happy meal that was the Chicago Reader. Amusing but hardly of any real value.

Their complete silence in the face of ongoing valid complaints is disrespectful and offensive to paying customers.

Quite honestly, I can’t imagine why they think any of us would want to renew in April.

Which one? I am trying to test out all these bizarre problems to see how many people they are affecting.

So far for me my only problem is suffering the lack of a search feature.

This is frustrating, hopefully there will be word on a resolution before the weekend at the very least.

Okay, one thing. I just noticed my timestamp is off by an hour. I double-checked and it is set correctly.

Then don’t. <shrug>

Well, I don’t really want you not to subscribe, obviously. I’d prefer you stayed. But I guess my point is, everyone complains about the situation, but everyone re-ups their membership. So, to me, this means that whatever the complaints, they aren’t really that upsetting.
Which is why I ask people to keep things in perspective. Minor annoyances are just that, minor annoyances. Major problems are things like: I can’t walk, my car got destroyed in an accident and I can’t get to work, my plane is stuck on some damn super-treadmill and can’t get off the ground, you know, the really annoying things that happen in life.

Yeah, the number of other messageboards that I have to pay to belong to is zero. They work fine with search functions and everything. This one I have to pay 15 bucks to post on. And it has problems out the wazoo. I think I’ve got perspective.

That’s the real problem. TPTB have verified that they can depend on a given amount of revenue without expending diddly point spit towards resolving customer complaints.

If 90% of income results from the status quo (assuming 90% renewal), then the revenue lost by the 10% non-renewing becomes the driving number of the equation. Improvements sufficient to satisfy that 10% exceed additional income derived, so it’s easier to issue vague statements about what’s going to be done tomorrow, because tomorrow never comes.

Naw, a bunch of people complain and then leave. I’d search for those threads, but…

$15. Wow. I spent three times that to gas up my car today. I spend half again that to read National Geographic for a year. I spent that for a decent dinner last night at a restaurant.

We pay that money because we generally enjoy the ability to post and exchange ideas. Remember, you are talking to someone who sat off this board for well over a year (almost 2 if I’m not mistaken) because he initially didn’t want to pay to be able to post. I found the attraction was worth the minimal cost.

I think I’ve got, perhaps, a better perspective. I would love to have some people join me in it.

Would you complain if the fuel in your tank had water in it and caused your auto to stop running? What if a third of next year’s NG issues didn’t show up, or were torn in half when they arrived? A decent meal is worth that. We’re bitching about a cold dish which isn’t what we ordered.

…they don’t exist.

I searched for “membership”, “renew” and several variations of “don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out” and came up with about 350 hits but didn’t find “a bunch of people” actually leaving because of board performance.

I’m not terribly displeased that search has been suspended for now. That means fewer performance issues for those of us just reading & posting, meanwhile BoardReader seems to be working just fine.

I spotted that on my computer a week ago and at first, blamed SDMB (everything else was going wrong), but some tests revealed it may be the way your computer interprets Daylight Saving Time, not the timestamp sent by the forum software. Remember that most home computers have hard-coded the days of the year that DST is to be compensated for if enabled, but those days are now wrong for few weeks in Spring and Fall. Like now.

I leave it to your imagination to guess what will happen on the first Sunday in April.

I just did a quick test and the board reader search missing many threads. I will do a little more testing and try to come back with an average. Right now, I would say over 50% are missing and especially on stuff under a week of course.

I’m not one to start huffing and puffing and threaten to take my business elsewhere. The fact is, I have more than nine months left on my current subscription, so I’ll sit back and see what develops. I have to say, though, that Search and New Posts have been exceptionally useful, and I’m one of those who feel lost without them. It’s quite a pain not to be able to see quickly if a topic has already been covered before starting a thread on it or see new posts to old threads. Yes, I’m using the Subscription function in User CP now, but the threads I had been monitoring are now hard to find. I would like to think management does care and are not as soulless as some of the posters are convinced they are.

Despite some people’s high opinion of me, I do not necessarily enjoy littering threads with pointless comments. The “subscribe to this thread” function under the “thread tools” bar has become my friend.

Oh, and I’m subscribed through July. So unfortunately I cannot make a big huff about resubscribing for some time as well.

No, actually I don’t. I belong to a number of other messageboards that have large contingents of Dopers on them. I do not suffer from lack of conversation with intelligent people. I pay my $15 to search. I am extremely pissed about the current disabling. My point is that for a messageboard to require paid subscriptions and then still not work an acceptable amount of the time is ridiculous.

Then don’t be a paying participant. What part of this equation are you not understanding?

I’m not objecting to feeling unhappy about the situation. I think not being able to search is unfortunate. I’ve seen message boards that permanently disabled the function (example: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com ) and it sucks. What I’m trying to convey is that the relatively minor annoyance of being without a function of the Board, while they get things straightened out with the new bosses, isn’t worth acting like the whole thing is a total piece of crap. Perspective. That’s my message. And if it really, truely is THAT important to you, then DON’T PAY to be a member. Exercise your consumer rights. Make capitalism work. Etc.

I hope you don’t.
