Thanks to you all for a very interesting conversation. My 14 year old daughter was diagnosed bipolar 2 years ago. She’s getting out of the juvenile detention center today. It has been a rough roller coaster ride with her. She takes Lithium and now Topomax, too. She was pretty stable for a year and a half until the pressures of starting high school and other events over the Summer brought on the worst episode she’s had. She began throwing alcohol and marijuana on top of the meds, or not taking the meds at all. Things went down hill from there.
An interesting fact: one of my daughter’s psychiatrists told us that Lithium is a naturally occuring substance that is in all of our drinking water. In areas of the world where the Lithium level is higher, the diagnosis’ of depression and bilpolarity are considerable decreased.
Now, the thought has occured to me that first of all, getting Americans to drink tap water is pretty tough. And, when we do drink water, is is of the bottled, highly filtered variety. Could it be that we have effectively dropped our natural Lithium levels below a therapeutic level as a society that is causing the increase in depression and bipolarity?
Could it be that instead of overdiagnosis, as some have suggested, we are actually seeing a dramatic increase in mental illness because of our diet, stress levels and the chemicals we ingest through food and air every day?
Are we breeding more mental illness with each successive generation?
