Any suggestions appreciated.

The Sydney Morning Herald? or ABC News Online?
(apologies for the balls-up above; missing bracket)
Another vote for SMH & ABC. Also try SBS. I dont know how their online news is but their TV news is top notch.
SBS’ news site is theworldnews.com.au .
SBS is a unique broadcaster. It is government funded, with some private sponsorship (shows commercials only between programs), and has a multicultural and international focus. It shows top-notch foreign language programs (news and movies), and its own news broadcasts are, IMHO, Australia’s best.
The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) - linked to already - is the main government broadcaster, operating one national television channel (with local, state-based newsrooms, etc), Radio Australia (short wave and online feed), Radio National, a news and parliamentary broadcast station, and local stations in the cities and large country regional centres. It is entirely government funded, and is very similar to the UK’s BBC. It is often accused of having a slight left-wing bias. At the risk of getting flamed, I agree with this accusation. If your politics are on the left, you’ll like the ABC. If you are further right, and are prepared to have to turn your bullshit filter on occasionally, you’ll probably still like the ABC because it is usually well balanced and its news is good quality.
Australia’s News Limited is part of the Murdoch empire. It’s commercial and a bit on the tabloid side.
The Sydney Morning Herald (already linked to) is Sydney’s main broadsheet newspaper, and The Age is its Melbourne stablemate.
I have always found The Chaser to be useful.
- Bubba.
If you have a specific bit of Oz in mind try here for everyone’s local rag.
I also rely on The Age and the ABC. crikey.com.au is good for political scuttlebutt too.
And just in case I mentioned which building I work in to any of you, I’m fine.
Do you work at Monash University? (Story) Its quite amazing now that when some random crazy goes off in Australia from now on, police are going to have to ‘rule out terrorist activity’.
