What's the best chase scene in a movie?

Agreed.

I live in fear of this:

The “bum” is an immigrant worker. Nobody understands what’s he’s saying, because he doesn’t speak English, so the Police don’t realize that Joe has switched trucks until the sergeant fortuitiously happens to understand the guy, because his father is the same nationality. Just for the record, the language the hobo is babbling is Polish. I know that because that’s my old man’s lingo.*
Hey, Thanks, Cal! Tell me more! I’d sure like to know what the immigrant’s words were in print (from the time he first speaks frantically to the sergeant, who has just told the beat cop “Take him back, I’ll book him when he’s sober!” to the moment the sergeant, on the phone, says something like “Chico, boy! Chico!” to the hobo).

A clue I overlooked: The desk sergeant speaks to “O’Toole” on the phone. His own name is Dobrynski, which should have been a hint to me about it: I hadn’t equated the sergeant’s use of '“ingo” with what we usual know as “language.” :o

Can’t believe no one’s mentioned Ben Hur – the Chariot race has to be the greatest action sequence ever filmed, and pretty well counts as a chase.

Ok, I dunno if this counts as a chase, but if it does; it has to be the bit at the end of one of the Herbie movies, i think it was number three, where all the beetles come to life and drive around. That little rusty one from the junkyard was so cute.
Otherwise, I’m gonna have to go with the Blues Brothers, and possibly The Bourne Identity

Well, along with this I’m now expecting Alfie (2003) starring David Schwimmer.

Oh and The life of Brian. The chase where he has to haggle, then runs up the stairs and falls into the alien’s ship. Very strange, but ultimately one of the best chases in a movie ever

I personally think that William Friedkin’s Jade had an amazing chase-scene. Most chase-scenes just don’t feel real, but this one did. Of course Friedkin had some practice in The French Connection , but still…

Cuate beat me to the punch re: Go West.

I’m also partial to What’s Up, Doc? and the chase scene in Raising Arizona. “Son, you’ve got a panty on your head.”

Hijack re Ronin:
What kind of car were they in when DeNiro pops out of the sunroof with a rocket launcher? It looked very much like a brown version of the Mercedes I drive, and would be cool if it were.

Hey, did anybody else see “Sex and the Single Girl?” At the end of the movie, there’s a crazy car chase scene that involves about eleven vehicles, and all of the characters switch places, steal cars, and there’s a policeman there too. This may not be the best car chase scene ever, but it would probably win the award for having the most people.

did the origianl question specifically mention cars? anyway, for funniest chase I’d nominate the end of “Seven Chances” with Buster Keaton.

Ignore the horrid re-make with Robin the boy wonder.

I can’t remember which early Pink Panther movie it was, but it ended with a chase around a small village. There’s a small convertible being driven by a large man in a gorilla suit, and an old man trying to cross the plaza.

A Shot in the Dark?
The Pink Panther?

Raising Arizona - great slapstick with dogs, panty hose, and baby diapers.

I haven’t seen the movie in a LONG time, but I still remember the chase and the ending especially for
"Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" as being pretty damned good.

Time to watch it again, if I can find it.

One of the funniest chase scenes is in Back to the Future When the Libyans arrive and shhot at Doc, and Marty drives off in the DeLorean. Marty says “See if you b***ards can do 90” (Time travel occours at 88mph). The Libyan fires at the DeLorean as it chases him across the parking lot, and then the DeLorean disappears and then the surprised Libyans drive into a kiosk.

Maybe not the “best” chase scene, but an awfully good in (albeit in a lousy movie) is the chase scene near the end of “Gone in Sixty Seconds.”
