What's the best toenail clipper you've ever used?

I have arthritis in my left hip and find it very difficult if not impossible to clip my toenails. Obviously, I could go for pedicures but I’m also diabetic and am concerned about cleanliness in nail salons. What are your solutions regarding clippers, and other accessories for getting this task done as painlessly as possible? TIA

Funny you should ask – I actually do have a recommendation for you. By far the best clippers I’ve ever used. They are pretty sharp, though, just a heads up.

Like these.

I bought these several months ago.

Compound leverage, but there’s a strong spring, so if you have a weak grip they might not work for you. Looks to be the same one used by my wife’s podiatrist.

I’ve tried a few fancy clippers from Amazon but have settled on just going to the podiatrist to get them clipped. She bills Medicare and I pay $6 – not a full pedicure, just clip the nails.

Turble, have you tried, and rejected, either of the units mentioned?

Dan

When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I was warned not to clip my toenails myself and I have gone to a pro ever since. He is an RN and runs a blood pressure and toe care. It is expensive ($40, a clip, so to speak, every 6-8 weeks), but he not only clips the nails, but slices and grinds down bunions and mainly examines my feet carefully. All his instruments have been sterilized and sealed into a package and he even wears a face mask (although that is likely to protect himself the dremel dust).

My toenails are thick. My usual clippers were rescue scissors, the kind that can cut vehicle seatbelts, left over from my EMT days, and wirecutters. But my toenails have gone twisty lately so I see a podiatrist a couple times a year. My Medicare copay is about US$25 each time. She uses a Dremel Moto-Tool and yes, I could too, but why risk it?

Thanks for the recommendation. The clipper looks long enough that I can bend forward enough to clip my toenails. I ordered these along with a toenail softening cream. TIA

I don’t really remember the specific models; they were Amazon purchases labeled as “professional” type and had good reviews (FWIT). They were fine and worked well enough but this old and not so nimble guy found them to be scary strong and sharp … basically they just made nervous and I decided to go the podiatrist route.

You probably know this, but water softens nails a lot. I often soak my fingertips in water prior to cutting the nails (which I do every week) so they don’t chip and leave sharp bits. I generally gut my toenails (which I only do every other month or so) after a bath or a long, hot shower.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I’m waiting for the toenail clipper I ordered from Amazon because it was advertised as being long enough to clip my toenails without having to lean forward too much. I guess I needed to ask what clippers worked well for people with stiff joints that can’t bend over really well.

I had a college roommate that used these. Swore by them, no bending over at all.

Very funny, Omar. Did your roommate cut off all the toes on one foot in one motion?:dubious:
