We usually get strawberries every week, and supervenusfreak will stem and slice them in the living room, while watching TV. And every time he does this, all three cats suddenly become VERY interested in what he’s doing. The only other time they do this is when he’s cleaning shrimp (but that I can understand…cats and seafood).
Is this a common thing or are our cats just weird? Or is that not mutually exclusive?
I like the coloration of the fourth feline…that kinda grey-ish purple color coat makes their eyes really stand out.
That said, I hate cats anymore. They smell up a place no matter the amount of litter box maintenance. You can always tell as soon as you walk into a place whether there are felines or not.
Sorry, I need to go to bed now, I’m ranting. Apologies for the hijack (it’s really a long story with much cat-love in between).
I swear I’m not gay…did I just agonize over the duality of my relationships with fucking cats?
Macy - very young…this was taken at about 10 weeks. Macy is our Stewie…I swear someday she’s going to kill us all in our sleep, put on our skin and take over the world with her human disguise…
Scraps - same time. She and Macy are littermates. Mom was a black and orange calico. Scraps is a gray and peach calico with a very “Pheobe” (from Friends) disposition.
I think they are associating the strawberry behavior with the shrimp behavior. My cat shows up whenever I open a kitchen cabinet because he knows that is where I keep the tuna. Your cats are probably hoping for some shrimp when they see someone slicing things in the living room. If you let them smell the strawberries I think they will lose interest.
I haven’t noticed anything with strawberries and cats but a couple days ago I made a quick salad to take to work and I cut up some olives on top then loosely put the cover on the container while I put the rest of the stuff back in the fridge. I turned back around to see a cat had knocked the lid off the container and was in the act of stealing an olive. I have known a few other cats that seemed to have a thing for olives.
Cats are carnivores but I have found most will eat a plant, I’ve read some of them even turn into herbevores (well totally true) but once a cat discovers he/she likes plants she may eat them.
My mother grows aloe plants and my cat will sink it’s teeth into the fleshy part and suck the aloe juice. I don’t know why, she seems to have developed a taste for it. Other than that she’s a meat loving cat. I have seen her even put cheerios in her mouth, but she’ll just spit them out and now she prefers to play hockey with the cheerios instead of taste them
She’s a vampire kitty and she’s trying to build up her immunity to sunburn. I wonder if that would have worked for Bunnicula. Or Nosferatu. Tell her it won’t work, aloe has to be applied externally. Incidentally, aloe juice is good for hair. Which may be why Dracula had such a righteous coif.
Actually, it’s probably the noise he’s making that is attracting them. He’s likely creating small rustling noises, that to a cat seem similar to a mouse or other prey moving around.
I’ve found several things I do that attract my cats attention like that, and they will leap up and look around to see if there’s a mouse in the vicinity.
Agreed about the misplaced association. I had a friend who used to “call” her cat by running the automatic can opener. The cat came because it associated the noise with cat food being prepared.
