I’m only familiar with the story from the Disney version, but apparently, in the original fable, Snow White had a sister named Rose Red. How did she fit into the story? How different was the original from the version most of us are familiar with from the movie?
Snow White and Rose Red is not the same story as Snow White. Those links should answer a few questions.
Snow White and Rose Red is actually a different fairy tale. It doesn’t have any connection to the better-known Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs other than that they both have a character named Snow White.
You are confusing two different fairy tales. The Snow White story that Disney adapted has only the the one princess – the one who went off to live with the seven little men and so on.
There is also another story, “Snow White & Rose Red,” which is completely different. The sisters in that story were not princesses, but the daughters of a poor widow. There was a single dwarf in the story – a badtempered one. There is also an enchanted bear. One of my all-time favorite fairy tales (this and King Thrushbeard!). Here is a link to a good version of the story. Beware, though, it’s got nasty, bright font on a black background. If I were you I’d copy and paste it into Word before you read it.
Damn! You guys are quick!
Cool, thanks for the explanations, everyone!
I had this book as a child, I always loved the illustrations in it. I wonder if I could find it again? Thanks for bringing up fond memories Miller.
Heh, I thought at first you were asking about the Stephen King haunted house.
In the comic book series Fables there was an early storyline about a rivalry between the sisters because Snow was so much more famous than Rose.
