Saw it posted on Facebook. It looks like C-3PO’s lower legs are completely mangled in a way I don’t remember seeing, even when he was disassembled in ESB. Is this some level of damage that was filmed but not used?
Just a guess, but it looks to me like they just haven’t finished dressing Anthony Daniels, yet. Maybe they do the torso first, so he can sit down and be comfortable. Then he stands up and they attach the legs around his real legs, pop the covers on his feet, and they’re good to go.
Or the other way around; could be they’re taking the costume off in this picture.
It looks like they have elaborate, detailed mangling. And an instrument arm from R2-D2 positioned to do repairs.
His left knee is exactly like that in the movie. You see it pretty clearly when R2 is fixing the hyperdrive and C3P0 is standing there holding his lower leg or when R2 zaps his foot accidentally on purpose, which appears to be the scene they are prepping in the photo. Right before R2 zaps him, you can see the same tool is soldering his foot or ankle. Maybe they just didn’t use any footage of C3P0 with his foot off in that scene. I mean, when Chewbacca brings C3P0 to their room on Cloud City, he’s in a million pieces in a box with a lot of wires sticking out. Pretty sure you can see his feet poking out in those shots. It’s a disjointing Tony Soprano would be proud off.
Here’s the scene from the movie:
It’s pretty common to shoot the same scene in different ways and decide which take works best during editing.
Speaking of old Star Wars photos.
