What's the fastest you've ever been in a car

Around 140 in a Porche 944 Turbo
Around 120 in 69 'Cuda with the top down

I’d really like either some track time or a ‘get out of jail free’ card to see if my current Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo will really do the 155 as advertised.

I’m a weenie. I’ve only been up to about 100, maybe 105, in my Z3. Rumor has it that it’s got a chip that tops it out at about 130 mph, but I haven’t confirmed that in actual practice (yet).

My friend had his mom’s Toyota Corolla ('97 or so) up to 115mph while we were driving out to the hamptons.

As an honorable mention, I got my '87 Dodge Shadow up to 95mph, and the only reason I know that was because I got a ticket for it. (The speedometer only went to 85, and the needle was pointing straight down, so I had no idea how fast it was)

Cop: Do you know how fast you were going?
Me: I don’t know, my speedometer only goes to 85.

Ok I didn’t really say that, I was too scared. But I always used to joke that if it ever happened I would. Anyway, I got 8 points on my license and never had another ticket since (about 4 years ago). knock on wood

One night, driving from Knoxville to Birmingham, I got my '94 1.8L DOHC Mazda Protege up to around 112-113. I was keeping up with a Porche 911. True, he could have left me any time he wanted, but I thought my little car did a pretty good job.

I’m going for a race car driving school at the Texas Speedway in Jan. They say you can get above 150. I can’t wait.

My 1985 Porsche 944 used to be able to top out at about 143, according to my dad, but I’ve only gotten it up to 125 or so.

Other cars I’ve been lead-footed in:

  • 165 in a kit replica of a 427 Cobra
  • 120 in my sister’s old 5.0 Mustang (which she later totalled)
  • 140 test-driving a 2000 Corvette
  • 135 in my friend Dan’s 1980 Camaro (305 w/rebuilt QuadraDog 4-barrel carb. One hell of a fast car.)
  • 87 (estimated) in my old yellow 1971 VW SuperBeetle (1776 cc)

Driver: 119mph (Or so…) 1988 Buick Regal Limited

Passenger: Almost 130mph 1969 Dodge Dart (That’s what I’m told. Sadly, I don’t remember that.)

108 mph in a rental Pontiac of some sort.

3 a.m. in the San Joaquin Valley somewhere before Grapevine.

Just wanted to see how fast it could go. Did not realize that the new cars had computers that would cut off fuel at a certain speed.

When that thing hit 108 it sounded like it tried to shift into a gear that wasn’t there. I was sure I had just broken the dang thing.

I’ve been up over 90 many times in our '93 Ford Festiva.

Oh, for those are considering a day at the race track: GO! You’ll wonder why you didn’t before. It’s the most amazing fun, it’s an educational experience and if screw up and do something silly, it (probably) won’t kill you.

And you’ll be a better driver/rider, at least in a technical sense, than before.

Somewhere between 110 and 120 twice. Once in a Ford LTD on the Trans-Canada highway in New Brunswick, and once in a Volkswagen Golf on highway 295 in southern Miane, we made it from Portland to Freeport (about 25 miles) in about 15 minutes. It wasn’t my idea and I wasn’t really impressed. I thought we were dead men for sure.

I don’t know exactly…it was bouncing off the peg at 85 mph (93 actual with the bigger-than-stock tires), and still accelerating…I’d say about 105, or a little more…could’ve gone higher, but there were two 18-wheelers side by side in front of me doing 70…and a wicked crosswind (which really makes a difference, especially in my Jeep )

Dammit! Euty or UncleBeer: wanna make that last bit an “” and a “)” ? Please?

150 mph in Viper. 145 on FZR 1000 Yamaha. 125 mph in a Prowler.

Fastest ever: 170mph in a race-modified Corvette. Scared the hell out of me, mainly because I wasn’t driving.

Fastest as a teen: 115mph in my '67 Charger.

Fastest lately: I’m not sure – estimated about 110mph. I’ve got that stupid 85mph speedometer in my '86 Fiero. The needle continues around, but you have to estimate the markings. I wasn’t at top speed, I ran out of nerve.

Fastest on a motorcycle: 135mph on a Suzuki 550GT. Three-cylinder two-stroke, an absolute screamer. I had the bike for 3 months before I got a tune-up. Turns out it had only been running on 2 cylinders. I inadvertantly popped wheelies for a week, until I got used to it. Then it was another month before I realized it had a 6-speed transmission!

Top as driver: about 115 in an 85 Mazda RX-7.

Cop: Do you know how fast you were going?
Me: Um, 55?
Cop: Get real, Mr. Davey, I have radar.

Strangely, I didn’t get a ticket. The cop just drove off. He must have gotten a more important call (thank god).

I also managed to get my first car, a 1975 Volvo somethinorother 4 cyl to about 95 downhill with a tailwind. It did not handle as well as I’d like. It did later save my life in a head-on, though, so I can’t complain.

as a passenger: about 115 mph in a Mazda RX-7 (i think) on I-89 in New Hampshire. I was in the back seat. I am 6 foot 2. The driver was from Oklahoma and was accustomed to long, ruler-straight highways. This was the first and last time I used my college’s ride board.

as a driver: 110 MPH in my 1995 Mazda Protege on U.S. 2 in eastern Montana. This was during the era when there was no numerical daytime speed limit there. Mind you, route 2 is a 2-lane undivided highway. I only went that fast for a short distance, as I began to wonder about the brakes and the tires. And the engine, for that matter-- it’s a manual transmission car but it has no tachometer. And it’s the model with the small (base model) engine. A year prior to this experience I drove the same car about 95-100 on I-15 in western Montana. The funny thing was that all the cars going 65-70 had Montana plates, while all the cars whizzing past me at 120 were from Colorado and California and Utah. I guess the novelty wore off for the natives.

I got up to 118 mph on a nice straightaway near me in an old, beater Camaro I owned once upon a time. The speedometer was still climbing, but I chickened out because the car was shaking pretty good and I was worried about my bad tires.

I’ve often wondered how fast I could have gone.

Re: The Ferrari F1 track ride: Holy SHIT!

I once took my beloved Turbo Thunderchicken up to 200 kmh which translates to 126 mph. That’s as far as the speedometer goes and the car still has some left at that speed… I hear that they top out at 135 mph (stock). When I add the intercooler and a boost regulator I might have to see just what a 2.3 litre turbo 4 can really do. heh heh heh

I went for a ride in a Mach 1 mustang once and we hit 150 mph. Friggin’ scary!

My old 750 (bored to 812cc) Honda Supersport could get to 145 mph in no time and that’s where my sense of self preservation usually kicked in… it could have gone faster if I had felt a burning need for extreme speed. The thought of being scraped from the asphalt has never appealed to me.

155~160 ( there was some arguement about when the passenger hit the start and stop buttons on his stopwatch) on my dad’s '84 ninja 1000r. 190 indicated. That was a bad time to ask me “how fast does this really go?”

Highest sustained speed was in excess of 120 on my Nighthwak 700 for 28 minutes. I needed to get back from palm springs in a hurry one night.

Lately…well, the other day, I went 45 in a 40. I really like having my license again.

150MPH even, in my “old” 1994 300ZX Twin Turbo… I miss that car. :frowning: I am pretty sure I went faster in a Porsche 928GT but I was the passenger, and didn’t ask.
