130-ish, Saab 9-3, in Sweden. Had to let her stretch her legs, ya know.
125 in a Dodge Neon. Automatic, non turbo. It probably took a couple thousand off the life of the engine (which conked out at 80K). I had gone over 100 before, but since I didn’t 100% trust my speedometer I went a bit over just to be sure. Then since I was almost at 110, I decided to see if I could do that. But did it really hit 110 or was that also a speedometer trick? Next thing you know I’m doing 125. Also on a 2 lane country road, approaching a hill!

Nissan 300zx 125 and I was scared shitless. It literally only lasted long enough for me to notice the speed and then I let off and coasted down to the limit.
I seem to be a cop attractor, and they catch me speeding all the dam time. (a smart person might take that as a hint to stop speeding)
107mph in my parent’s Chevy Malibu on a stretch of Highway 280 near Crystal Springs Reservoir.
Funny thing–years later, I found out my brother had got the same car up to 107 on the exact same strech of road.
About 100 mph going downhill on I-5 north of Los Angeles…anyone who has driven that stretch of road probably knows where I’m talking about. Now, that is not impressive in the context of this thread…but it was in a Honda Civic. I had no idea it could even go that fast.
Craziest thing was, I was passed by a minivan going 110.
140 in my 03 Mustang GT
145 on my 05 Yamaha FZ6
The speedometer in my 2007 Mustang GT stops at 145, but I was beyond that.
The fastest I have ever been was in a supercharged Z06 with a big cam. I was watching the dashboard as the needle hit 180mph.
I was fortunate enough to own many mid to high performance sports cars in my youth, in addition to having access to my BIl’s Ferarri and Lambo collection.
My license was suspended several times from age 16 to 22.
I still have several of those cars, plus faster bikes, but only occasionally will I go over 100.
I have found that crashing hurts.
Minus one more. I may have gone over 140 in my old '70 Cougar, but the speedometer didn’t go high enough to verify it. That was scary - the engine could handle the speed, but the brakes were a bit lacking.
I took my dad’s Ford Torino up to 100 mph once in the middle of the night, just to say I did. That was ~35 years ago.
More recently, I took a rented car up to 160 kph (which is ~100 mph) on an autostrade in central Italy. Same motivation.
I just had gotten my license, and was in my parents’ 1982 Buick Skylark, late at night on a completely empty two-lane Ohio highway I knew very well. Feeling ornery, I got up to 90 mph and then was a little freaked out by how fast the landscape was zipping past. I think that’s still the fastest I’ve ever driven. I didn’t like the feeling of not being able to react quickly enough if something bad happened.
85 - 90, in a VW.
92 mph in a Chevy Silverado, 2 am on the road right outside my hometown. I’m sure it could have done faster, but the steering started to shake most alarmingly above about 85. So now I don’t go faster than 83 or so.
Somewhere between 135 and 140 on a looooonnngg back road in rural NJ. 20 years ago in a 1989 Porsche 911 Turbo. It was exhilarating and fun, and incredibly scary. My SO at the time said we’d gotten to about 138. I took his word for it since after about 120 I wasn’t really looking at the dashboard anymore.
After that, 100 mph in a 1990 Honda CRX on a highway in NJ in the middle of the night. I’d had the car for about 2 days and wanted to see what it could do. I ended up getting pulled over and told the cop exactly that and showed him the purchase paperwork. He must have appreciated my honesty, he didn’t give me a ticket and just told me to keep it at the speed limit.
120mph in my friend’s Honda Civic CRX Si. That was a mighty zippy little vehicle. He was in the passenger seat, plugging in the radar detector and said “It’s stable up to 140mph”. This was on a long stretch of highway 70 in Illinois.
Then the radar detector went off. I was smart enough to realize several things right off the bat:
- Slamming on the brakes will probably get us both killed.
- If I was a cop and I saw somebody try and go from 120mph to 55mph I’d know they had a radar detector and were trying to get out of a ticket. That would be an insult to my intelligence and I’d write them up for everything I could think of. I was prepared to say “No excuse officer, you got me cold.”
So I just took my foot of the gas, let it coast and prepared for a big fat ticket and a lecture.
Turns out it was a false alert, no cop.
That was the last time I drove like that. Above 100mph things are happening REALLY fast and if you don’t know what you’re doing and the vehicle isn’t built to handle those speeds properly you’re asking for a gruesome accident. And that’s assuming that there’s nobody else on a good road.
15 over, so, what 85?
146 mph and the car was still pulling hard but I was running out of straight road. The car is electronicly limited to 165 mph and I’m sure it would do it. I only went that fast once, just to see what it would do. I wouldn’t want to blow a tire or have an animal run out in front of me at that speed.
2002 Pontiac Trans Am, LS1 engine. All stock.
95 in a Corvette, not that fast compared to others on here, but it was a mile long stretch of road that ended in a drop into a river… ssssscccccccrrreeeeccchhhhh…
You guys are making me feel like a wimp. Have that many people really driven over 120, or is there selection bias, with speed-demons coming here to brag? I hope everyone who reads this thread will reply.
I’ve only gone about 95. I’ve never owned a sportscar. I drive a Corolla which has a floaty feel, and it doesn’t feel very good once you get over 80. I’ve gone to 90 in it, but only a few times because it doesn’t feel very stable. I went to to 95 on a trip in a recent Honda Accord. I was impressed by how well it drove, for a family car. It felt pretty nice and stable at 95.
90-100 only because I fell asleep on the NJ Turnpike and my foot pressed down. Luckily it was at 2 AM and I woke up right away.
82 is about the fastest I will go by choice.
