What's the funniest single panel cartoon you've ever seen?

An Australian is on holiday in New Zealand.

Walking through the countryside, he passes a sheep farm.

In the distance, he sees the farmer getting it on with one of his ewes.

He marches up to the farmer and says indignantly “Y’know, mate, where I come from, we shear those!”

The New Zealander doesn’t even slow down. “Bugger off!” he says, panting. “I’m not shearin’ this with anybody!”

Ah, which reminds me of another Guindon cartoon. A man is walking down the street, and behind him is a crowd of people, all trying to hide behind a tree. Caption reads: “Harold is not paranoid. These people really do hate him and are following him.”

I have that posted in my cube.

Doug

This wordless Far Side one involving a puzzled penguin always struck me as utterly perfect.

That was always one of my favorites. Haven’t seen it in decades. Thanks.

Not strictly a cartoon, but my husband gave me a t-shirt like this.

Kliban did a similar cartoon.

Sidney Harris had some awesome ones. This one is a favorite, Lift.
As for Larson, I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Here, Fifi! C’mon!..Faster, Fifi!

There’s just something about vultures!

Damn.

I vaguely remembered this one as a single panel.

I should have mentioned Charles Addams, too.:smack:

Death ray…

I can’t find it online, but there’s his “A round trip and a one way to Ausable Chasm.”

Yet another Far Side: Lookout Ahead.

Also, a rare xkcd aimed at literature and history nerds: Knights.

I saw it on the door of a linguistics professor 30 years ago. In the foreground is a living room, with an expensive-looking chair with the legs sawed off. In the background, a kitchen with a mother and a little kid, and the mother is saying "No, Billy: “it’s ‘I have seen the chair.’”

You beat me! “Death Ray” might be my all time favorite Charles Addams.

Let’s not forget PUNCH magazine, which was doing NEW YORKER quality cartoons for decades before the NEW YORKER.

Circa 1910: A gloomy middle-aged man – the picture of “lonely bachelor” – sits with a menu in a scruffy bistro, addressing similarly scruffy waiter.

Caption: “Which of your beastly wines will induce oblivion?”

What can I say, I’m a dog.

I always enjoyed this one where the cow tries grilling some steaks/hamburgers.

Sick, Jessie, sick!

Speaking of the NEW YORKER, let’s not forget Peter Arno…

Scene: Outside a large collegiate sports arena, a Brahmin-type accompanied by his stuffy wife addresses a hawker selling buttons, pennants, etc., proclaiming WESTERN MARYLAND STATE and HARVARD.

Caption: “Which ONE? Are you MAD???”

JRDelirious, great call with the Quino. I loved his stuff when I lived in Mexico 15 years ago (Quino is Argentinian, but popular throughout Latin America.) About half his stuff is single-panel (often inventively wordless), and half is a Peanuts-esque (yet utterly original) strip called Mafalda.

This one is his most influential (and, yes, that’s the origin of the phrase).

N.B. Arno did the art, but did not write the jokes.

There are lots of great Far Side cartoons. Quino is also great but often more philosophical than LOL. As a medical man, Qadgop would love his book “Quinoterapia”, images which should be googled. My favourite one shows a patient in a doctors office…
