Oddly, mine isn’t as obvious as it seems. When I was picking my username I was listening to a song by my favorite singer, Jason Mraz and the song was Dream Life of Rand Mcnally. Now, it is the name I use for everything.
I knit. A lot. I used to be MadamDeFarge some places, because she’s a character famous for knitting. A had a problem with that, though, because I really, really, HATE Dickens. A lot. I was looking for a new username and someone in a chatroom somewhere suggested MinniePurl. It amused me at the time because I was running into a lot of people who seemed to think that being from Colorado automatically made me a hick. Of course, these are the types of people who think that anyone who isn’t from wherever they are from is automatically a hick. So I liked the play on the hickish character of Minnie Pearl. (You know, price tag on hat, “HOWWWDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”, and all that.)
Great thread, as I always wonder why people chose the usernames they did. I usually use the same name everywhere–dareva–which is part of my messenger IDs, but I was a little bored with it. So I took “Harimad-sol” from one of my favorite books, The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley.
I was Uncle Vinny on the radio for 8 years (KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston, Texas, “well geez kids, this is your old pal Uncle Vinny doing it for ya one mo’ 'gin”) and then I actually became an uncle so I really am Unclviny.
Actually the kids call me Coco because I am filled with chocolatey goodness
It’s simple enough. When I first joined up here, I used something a little too close to my real name for comfort. As time went on, I started using CJ more and more often in real life, and when I yielded to paranoia or common sense, depending on who you ask and decided to change my handle, “Siege” was the obvious choice. I like the idea that it also reflects part of my personality as well as being more or less gender neutral.
Maastricht is the city I moved to 10 years ago. I love this city, the oldest in the Netherlands. Many people who visited it, or have lived here a while, have good memories of it, as they told me on this very board.
Maastricht is big enough for there always to be something interesting going on, but the pace of life is relaxed, and at times it’s like a village in its atmosphere. Also, Maastricht is located in a corner of Holland, far away from busy drone of the main cities. I like that, as I like living in inconspicuous corners. It allows you to do your own thing.
Again, great stuff all. I am reading these and love it. I need to ask another time, though, waht the hell was QtM saying? And ? I still don’t get the food reference. Or was I right on the mange-disease thing?
Um, that, and Madame DeFarge is kinda creepy, non? I mean, you weren’t knitting up an enemies list or anything, were you? If you were, can I give you some names to add to it? I now have an odd image of you in my head – sitting in a rocking chair, with a big straw hat, knitting names into a blanket in a cold fury, silent except for an occasional warning to anyone who dares bother you: “HOWDEEEEE…”
