What about my, mine, our, ours, your, yours, his, her, their, theirs? Granted, “its” is more confusing because the possessive is formed the same way it would be for a noun (minus the apostrophe), but it’s not as though “its” is an exception, it’s just that none of the pronouns use apostrophes to form their possessives.
Just a quick note in defense of “The best XXX is XXXX. Period. End of argument”
Obviously, if I post that in an imho thread, I don’t mean that I actually expect other people to stop discussing the topic. But it does have a particular meaning for me, which is that not only do I really strongly believe the opinion I just posted, but I believe so unreservedly. That is, I might think that West Side Story is the best musical ever, but it’s close. Whereas, I’m just certain that The Iron Giant is the best American animated movie of the past 20 years. So I express that opinion in a very dramatic fashion… perhaps someone else, seeing that a fellow doper feels so passionately about it, will watch The Iron Giant, in which case my work is done. Doesn’t mean that I actually think the discussion ought to end.
