What's The Most Expensive Meal You Ever Had (in a restaurant)

Best meal ever. As for price, I had a long and fruitful talk with the sommelier, plus we spent the night. So it wasn’t cheap.

£1360 is a big chunk of change

An ex fiance and I did Paris, back in the 70s. I can say that we did all the places that you would see in movies … so I am sure that he was laying out serious money feeding us … but he had the money to do it with, so it really didn’t bother me.

mrAru and I are still planning on doing Peter Lugers one weekend soon, and I understand that can run to a couple hundred each.

Otherwise, the only expensive thing we do is an annual all you can eat lobster place that runs $80 per person. It is basically the only time I break my normal diet, we split the dates between our birthday and use the middle day to celebrate our mutual birthday.

Holy shit. Was the hotel bit as good as the rest of the experience?

I always think it’s funny that about once every year or so I spend as much on a single meal as I could on a modest holiday. Yet strangely I feel the experience is usually just as valuable in my memories, even though it lasts just a few hours. Yet I know some people who think doing such a thing is mad/pretentious. I argue the first is possibly true, the second not so much. Maybe it’s because I love novelty and sensory excitement, and others don’t value it as highly.

(Also, I hope you got seriously laid that night.)

The rooms are something else. We had his ‘n’ hers baths and a shower big enough for a rugby team.

(and yes I did :D)

Chez Panisse, probably. Entrees were $95 each for the two of us, plus we drank three bottles of really good wine. All told it was about $500.

French Laundry came close, but we didn’t drink that much. And the experience was almost ruined by a waiter like this guy.

All these $100+ meals and I felt decadent with the $60 dollar meal I had around Christmas!

Even the delicious candlelit dinner I had last weekend with sweetie at a Greek restaurant didn’t break $100 for the two of us…

I’ve probably had more expensive meals but I wasn’t paying and didn’t know the price, or it was part of a package getaway and I couldn’t start to break down the meals and hotel etc to figure out one supper.

I spent about $400 American dollars for my meal alone at L’Altro Mastai in Rome. That was probably my most expensive meal. It was really good but not the best meal I’ve ever had. In fact, it wasn’t even the best I had in Rome. I will say that was the best wine I’ve ever had.

I think I’d pay $400 for a cup of nutella gelato right about now.

I’m small time

Most I ever did was about $200 for myself in a Ruth’s Chris

It was with my boss, we expensed it.

Going through 5 Sapphire Martinis was the probable cause. It was a good time, though. Probably the first time I ever really “connected” with my boss.

I dropped about US$400 on a birthday dinner for me at Ryugin in Tokyo. To quote a previous poster: “Worth Every. Last. Dime.”

My wife and I would, about once a year, go out for dinner, and hang the expense. I recall one tab at about $350 for the two of us, including cocktails and wine. And yes, it was worth every dime.

My farewell dinner for my last job was at Chez Panisse. They took the whole office out- even the interns. There was wine and desserts and the works. Surely cost a fortune!

I was a secretary that had only worked there six months. The mind boggles to think where they would take someone important!

Either **The Fish Market **at the Intercontinental in Doha, Qatar or L’Etoile (early 1990’s). At the Fish Market 175-200 USD a head without wine. Could afford it then. L’Etoile 50-100 USD with wine couldn’t really afford it then.

I’d have to look in up on Quicken, but I would say $150-$250 is around the upper range for me and my girlfriend (including wine/ drinks). We have a bit of a penchant for dining out for steak or sushi and NYC has plenty of choices. Plus my job offers a fair number of oportunities for expensed dinners.

At the Osaka location of Blue Note, I spent about 250$. That was a 200$ bottle of wine and 50$ for the food, heh. The worst part is the girl broke up with me on the train ride back. (Can you say used?)

The 2nd-most expensive was just 2 months ago, at the now-closed Rangetsu in Orlando, FL. An 100$ 5-course meal, a 60$ bottle of sake, plus tax and tip.

I regret neither

I had a fresh truffle risotto starter at Grossi Florentino here in Melbourne which was around $80 - the main version of this was around the $130 mark. I thought that was crazy money to pay, but the guy who was talking us out to thank us for some work we did insisted I have it, since I wasn’t drinking. (They’d just ordered a $250 bottle so I hate to think what the evening cost for the 4 of us).

It would probably have to be our second anniversary dinner at Topolobampo. I think the bill was upwards of $300 (maybe $350ish)-- we had one cocktail each at the bar (I had a tamarind mojito) and then did the tasting menus with wine pairings. And it was so worth it.

We have upcoming reservations at Tru and I can’t wait.

I don’t move in the rarefied circles many here seem to.

Most expensive meal I can recall having was at LeMont, a pretty classy joint high above the intersection of the Three Rivers in Pittsburgh.

My ex-wife and I, my cousin and her husband. This was close to 30 years ago, and as I recall the bill for the four of us was $160 or more. In today’s dollars, obviously, that would be a lot more.

Plenty rich enough for my blood!

Adjusted for inflation, probably a meal that I had in Baltimore back in 1988. I don’t remember the name of the restaurant, only that it was really close to the Harbor. There was a group from work, and I think the bill came out to about $1500.

:jealous: They were full the last time I was in Tokyo, but I really want to go there.

Masa’s in San Francisco in the mid-90s, when Julian Serrano was the chef. Prix Fixe and vaguely remember the cost being around $100 a head, sans wine. Brought in my own bottle, which totally didn’t go with the food but I was young and dumb and trying to impress my girlfriend. The restaurant was extremely gracious and service was top notch. Bought two glasses of Yquem from them to finish the meal. The food and wine were expensive, but worth it. Still one of the finest meals I’ve ever had. The lobster salad got a lot of raves and lived up to the hype.
