Was the Pinto-Based Ford Mustang II So Terrible After All?
The truth about the Mustang everyone loves to hate.

Oh yes! That’s what I thought too. ST:TOS, the Frank Gorshin episode.
I saw a silver Mustang Mach E driving down the freeway today. It’s the first one I’ve seen in the wild and I’m not a fan of the design – it looks like every other generic “SUV” on the road. Mustangs are supposed to be curvaceous, sporty coupes, not whatever this is.
Random internet pic:
I’ve been seeing those for a while now. I can’t understand why they called that a Mustang. Not only does it not remotely resemble a Mustang, but IMO, it kinda ruins the Mustang name.
Even just giving the doors that iconic scoop(?) shape would’ve helped. I think the brake lights are about all they carried over.
With that said, IMO, they should have just called it a Ford Escape EV. It’s a lot closer to an Escape than a Mustang.
Also, how do you open the doors?
ETA, nevermind, there’s a little button to push. Presumbly there’s a place to use a physical key as well otherwise you’re kinda SOL if your car (or fob or phone) battery is dead.

I suspect they gave it the Mustang name because people are more likely to talk about it than if it shared the name of a boring SUV like the Escape. Even if people are just talking about it to complain about how it’s not a “real” Mustang, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
I don’t disagree that it’s not a Mustang, but the new GT version has something like 550hp and 750 pound feet of torque, good for 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. That’s no Escape.
it kinda ruins the Mustang name.
That ship sailed when they put a Mustang body on a Pinto chassis.

I didn’t read the article, but when I think of the Mustang II, Charlie’s Angels come to mind.
Not so ugly.

Someone in my town drives one of those. Piss yellow with rusted fenders and rocker panels. The first time I saw it I thought someone had put a Mustang badge of some generic Ford coupe as a joke. Little did I know. Definitely one ugly car. I thought the fox body Mustangs were ugly (well, they are ugly) but that thing takes the cake.

It was a little before my time, but the MotorTrend article jibes with what I’ve heard about the Mustang II elsewhere. That is, people dislike it now, but it was generally well received when it was new.

Well, it was the gas crisis. Anything above the Pinto’s old I4 was an option.

Dad had a loaner Fox body (i.e.: third genertation) when his usual daily driver was in the shop. That loaner had the Cobra option (i.e.: the old I4 with a turbo) but was still rather anemic.

I was too young to drive then, but I liked Mustangs. There was a Mach I that I fell in love when that I’s always see on my walks home from school. (To this day, that’s my favourite Mustang.) When the ‘New Mustang’ came out, I thought it was hideous. I didn’t know anything about how it drove; just that it was ugly.
A neighbor has one of these new Mustangs and it took a couple months for me to notice the pony logo. My jaw dropped, THAT’S a Mustang??
ETA: replied to wrong Mustang picture but you get the idea
Girlfriend 30 years ago had a mustang. Very good looking.
The car… not so much.
And the thing (the Mustang) did not have enough power to climb up over a curb. A ‘California curb that is angled and very common in Denver’
1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible, in excellent condition. It was parked in a driveway and I didn’t feel comfortable getting a front view.
My mom was gifted a Mustang when she graduated college in 1975. She talked about what a slow, lethargic POS it was. Now that I’m thinking about it it was probably one of the Pinto-based Mustang II’s. She get rid of it before I was born in 1981 and never owned another Ford.

How did you like its styling?

Shouldn’t that be on a Toyoda?

Styling? Is that still a thing?
It looked like any other car. Not objectionable, but not inspiring.
