That’s perhaps the best looking I’ve seen but, now lowered and capabilites reduced, it’s an even sillier version of a silly thing.
The side-marker lights were required in 1968, and the heavy bumpers required in '74, so it is somewhere between those years. The large open rear - wheel openings came in '72 so thAT IS MY GUESS
The ride height is adjustable. That looks like the lowest setting.
On the way home from work, coming from the other direction was a modern muscle car covered from bumper to bumper in Christmas lights.
I saw a Volkswagen ID. Buzz on the road this morning, the first one I’ve seen in the wild. For those unfamiliar, the ID. Buzz is an electric minivan with retro styling resembling the classic VW Bus.
Very cool. In my teens I learned to drive a stick on my dad’s VW Microbus. It was fun to drive, too, compared to the late 60s / early 70s GM tuna boats he had. I haven’t seen a VW ID. Buzz out in the wild yet but I look forward to it!

I could see bigger families getting something like that. Back in the 80s/90’s, there were plenty of moms hauling their kids around in converted Econolines. I knew two moms that drove vans that more more or less identical to that.
I think a lot of people might like that VW instead a opting for a minivan or something Tahoe/Suburban sized.
Edit: Now that I see the sliding door, I realize it’s still minivan shaped. My brain parsed that as the engine being tucked in closer to the driver, like you’d see on an Econoline or similar van. I didn’t realize it was an EV.
Well, maybe bigger rich families. Many of us who followed the “Updated VW Bus” news for years are disappointed in the premium price. Definitely NOT in the spirit of the original hippie-mobile…
I just saw my first Vinfast VF8 in the wild yesterday evening. I know the early reviews of this car were just terrible, so I have to wonder how the driver of the one I saw likes it.
If they last they might eventually succeed. Think of Hyundai from decades ago, to now where they seem to be thriving.

A beautiful blue Cobra. I guess if it’s a little chilly outside you put the removable top on it.
The owner of this truck returned as I was photographing it. He told me 1) It’s an '85, and 2) He still uses it for work every day. There are few things I love more than seeing an old vehicle still being used for its intended purpose.
A Jaguar I-PACE EV 400 AWD SUV. MSRP about $73,500.
This morning I saw a 1950ish Pontiac station wagon – it had the chrome strip up the middle of the hood that was Pontiac’s trademark at the time. The one pictured below is not the one I saw, just a picture from the web, but the one I saw was also in fairly rough shape. But it still looked solid, and it was being driven so it was apparently mechanically sound. I guess it was either a work in progress, or the owner just likes the “rat rod” look.
You would be charged $200 just to open the door at a Jaguar dealership (if you can find one).
Love the Pontiac station wagon. Could be a real sleeper. Stick a 454 under the hood. Shit, you could probably fit two.
These are common as dirt out here, but they all have a huge topknot on them.
(Waymo uses them)
Today, a Hyundai IONIQ 6 electric fastback sedan
Cd, or atmospheric drag coefficient, is a measure of how streamlined a vehicle is as it moves through the air. At speeds from about 35 MPH and up, most of the engine’s effort is spent pushing the vehicle through the air. Next time you’re driving down the highway at, say, 65 MPH, try holding your hand out the window flat against the wind. The force is impressive. Below about 35 MPH, most of the engine’s work is spent overcoming internal frictional forces.
The styling of the Hyundai IONIQ 6 electric fastback sedan exhibits the “Electrified Streamliner” design approach. Its atmospheric drag coefficient, Cd, is a near outstanding 0.21 and is equivalent to the slippery Lucid Air. For Cd values, 0.50s is terrible (e.g., trucks); 0.40s is okay (SUVs); 0.30s is pretty good (most cars); and 0.20s is outstanding (some EVs).
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 was first sold in South Korea in late 2022, and deliveries in the US began in March 2023.
Some Cd values for comparison:
- 0.34 — Tesla Cybertruck, is actually a decent number for this beast
- 0.331 — 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup truck
- 0.322 — Chevrolet Corvette C8 with the Z51 performance package
- 0.313 — Chevrolet Corvette C7
- 0.28 — Chevrolet Volt (similar to Toyota Prius Prime)
- 0.23 — Tesla Model 3
- 0.21 — Hyundai IONIQ 6, Lucid Air
- 0.208 — Tesla Model S, an outstanding value
Walking to Safeway a little while ago I saw this Cable Car Limo outside of the RV storage warehouse on Race Ave. Checking the website I see the rate is $600/hr. (photo from limo company website)
