Ran across a car I didn’t recognize today, so I ask the teeming millions:
What is it?
The grill is distinctly Jaguar, I had to do an image search for the model.
Yesterday I saw a silver Porsche 928. You don’t see those often anymore.
Coworker drove his 1975 Mercedes yesterday. Not sure what model, but I think it’s a 450SL. It has tech that wasn’t common on most cars of that era, including fuel injection, dual overhead cams, and four wheel disc brakes. Cool car.
That reminds me, I saw the distinctive silhouette of a bright yellow Porsche 914 on the highway Friday. That used to be my ideal car until I actually drove in one.
I had a boss who had one, back in the ‘80s/’90s. I had a bright yellow 924 at the time. I thought the 914s were cool when I was a kid. I’ve often thought it would be fun to have one. (First choice after I win the lottery would be a 1979-1989 911SC or Carrera 3.2 no-tail coupé, then a black 928, and then maybe a 914.)
In the parking lot I saw two of the same car, just 35ish years apart. Unfortunately, they were not parked next to each other, but I think I know why. There was a modern 4-dr Land Rover Defender, a luxury vehicle which probably thinks of offroading as the gravel parking lot at the soccer field.
A couple of spaces away, on the opposite side of the aisle was a late-80s, early 90s 2-dr Defender where the rear seats were inward facing benches & the ‘air conditioning’ was two wide 3"-ish high pieces of metal that would tilt open to let air flow in directly below the windshield. I’m guessing the newer one was there first & the older one refused to park next to it’s progeny.
I also saw an early 70’s Bronco with windows down & rear hatch up, no doubt for air conditioning airflow, & a modern Bronco with dual tube doors on the rear & no doors at all for the front seats.
The Jaguar XK8 convertible
The Jaguar XK8 was first released in 1996, and Jaguar had a clear winner with this beautiful design. Stylish, reliable, and luxurious, the XK8 quickly became a popular seller. Soon after, Jaguar released the XKR in 1998. For the original XK8, during a Top Gear test-drive, Jeremy Clarkson compared the interior of the original XK8 to sitting inside the lavishly decorated Blenheim Palace.
The XK8 convertible was much more popular than the coupé. In the 10 years from 1996 to 2005, Jaguar produced just under 20,000 XK8 coupés and almost 50,000 XK8 convertibles.
It passed me again today on my commute and I managed to grab a photo (kids, don’t try this at home). I was off by a little, according to an image search it’s a 1967 Chevelle.
This license plate gave me a chuckle — EV SALLY, on a Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Nicely done!
This of course refers to the 1966 song by Wilson Pickett ➜ https://youtu.be/16u6w0cjjrU?si=a-DMQq6YqUk4D8Es ■
In 1983 the phrase and song came back when physicist Sally Ride became the first American woman and the third woman to fly in space, after cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova in 1963 and Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982.
Mustang Sally — Ride, Sally, ride!
First time I’ve seen one in person
I was behind a Silverado pickup last night. It had some type of bungee that went between the bed (wide), down the tailgate & under the hitch. I’m pretty sure it was owned, or at least inspired by Borat because it looked like a truckkini.
I saw a dude with a Suzuki “Carry” at Lowes yesterday. Not that one, but very similar. I complimented him on his choice of vehicles…he said it wasn’t designed for 6’ tall guys, as trying to get his feet into the thing. The way the logo was (poorly) designed it was a scary truck.
It is dusk and I am traveling home via Marine Drive, Portland International Airport on my left and the mighty Columbia River on my right, and approaching me in the opposite direction? Five white AMC Gremlins in a row in what seems to be pristine condition. if earlier today someone bet me that five white Gremlins in good condition existed in the entire state of Oregon, I wouldn’t have taken that bet.
I was at the emissions place today with my truck, and the car in front of me was a 90s era Chevy custom van that appeared to be painted in white bed-liner. No pictures, because there was a sign in the waiting room that said “no pictures, video, or recording without permission.” Sure there’s a story behind that.
The van puffed out a big cloud of exhaust when it was started, so I’m not sure if it passed.
I’ve never seen a white Gremlin. I havn’t seen a Gremlin in oh, 30 years or so. That is truly bizarre. Twilight Zone bizzare.
That reminds me of the time in the early 2000s I was visiting our old neighborhood near Seattle when I spotted a DMC DeLorean parked on our old street. Then another. And another. And a few more, one with a trailer made from the front of DeLorean. Apparently this was the DeLorean club of greater Seattle monthly meeting.
I saw 2 within, 3 days, but I can only describe it. Both were silver. I would term them “stealth automobiles” because, like stealth aircraft, they had no curves in the body design at all. Everything was straight and angular. Very strange looking cars.
Got to find a link that works.
Found it! It’s a Tesla Cybertruck.
