What's the nerdiest thing about you?

Oh goodness…

  1. I’ll sit and argue with people on the science channel during a special…such as the ones on M-Theory. Especially the ones on M-Theory.

  2. I’ll sit in my room for days doing nothing but role-playing. I’ll eat and stuff like that but…nothing else really. I take RPs seriously.

  3. I took apart most of my little brother’s toys to make him a robot. Which he eventually broke. Oh well.

  4. I have everything Pokemon. Under my bed are boxes upon boxes of Pokemon trading cards, I have every guide, game, and system that you could play the games on.

  5. Speaking of cards, I have boxes upon boxes of Magic: The Gathering trading cards under my bed.

  6. At school, I used a tunnel to get into a role-playing forum website I wasn’t supposed to be on and during my free time in school, I code websites for people in exchange for the currency on that site.

  7. I can write in Elvish.

  8. I have an entire bookshelf dedicated to my Star Wars memorabilia, books, action figures, etc.

  9. I’m going to the top-ranked college in the state as a sophomore in high school for two days a week instead of going to high school…and I didn’t have to pay tuition.

  10. I was going calculus in the 7th grade.

  11. I’ve done NaNoWriMo, JulNoWriMo, JanNoWriMo, and Script Frenzy every year for 4 years.

  12. I build robots for contests. But everyone here does that I think.

  13. I get into heated debates about why Iron Man is 99999999.57847x better than Batman. I hate Batman with a burning passion.

  14. Comic books are my thing. I have over 300. But that’s not too many compared to what some of you guys have.

Basically my entire life is full of nerd-ness. I could go on, but it’s 2:30am and I’m tired…
I tried to be normal in school for a while, but eventually reached the point of “fuck it” and now I’m the nerdiest kid in school and I have no friends and I don’t even care. And I’m a 15 year old girl.

I memorized all of Tom Lehrer’s songs. Bought all his records on vinyl and again when they came out on CD.

Back in high school I translated Tom Lehrer’s I Hold Your Hand in Mine into Spanish for a Valentine’s themed class assignment. I could tell when the teacher was grading mine.

I hand made a chain mail shirt in college. Just because.

I’m not terribly nerdy, but I’ve suspected that the nerdiest thing about me is how excited I can get when I talk about politics. But then I talked to my boyfriend last night, and apparently he thinks the nerdiest thing about me is how much I love reading and how excited I get about books I want to read. So I guess it depends on who you ask, but there’s my opinion and his. (Yes, I know it doesn’t compare to all you role players and video gamers and electronics aficionados, but I still wanted to participate in this thread so I did.)

Playdate!!

OK, I just typed most of a huge post detailing my various levels of geekery, and then lost it. So I’ll just list the highlights that made me think “Wow, yeah, that is nerdy.”

  • Have previously designed and stitched a cross-stitch of the LOTR:FOTR movie poster. Currently stitching one I designed that’s a collage of images from the comic book, The Maxx.

  • Finally convinced my wife and brother-in-law to play Star Wars: Trivial Pursuit with me. They made me answer 10 questions in a row to count as 1 right answer. I still won.

  • own 700+ board/card games, 100’s of SW figures, tons of comics, legos, magic cards, RPG books, etc. dozens of Yodas and Yoda-related items, nearly every bit of merch related to The Maxx or Sam Kieth, nearly everything ever made from or about the D&D setting of Ravenloft, Near complete set of Highlander the Card Game cards (1st edition only)

  • Home-made The Maxx and The Tick costumes.

  • use vi for things other people use Word and Notepad for.

I’m using either laptop or tablet 15 hrs a day on an average. Does it make me a nerd ?

Depends on what you do on it; if it is all work related, then no. On the other hand, on my computer I write my own programs, run SPICE simulations and keep track of what I build (all related to my electronics hobby I mentioned earlier; I also have a second computer, which I found on the street, that I use for programming (chip programmer) and electronics (signal generator, etc)).

I named a series of house cats after blues singers: Odie (for Otis Rush), Duddy (for Robert “Dudlow” Taylor / pianist in SBWII’s band), Smokey (after Big Smokey Smothers), Frankie (for Frankie “Half-Pint” Jaxon) …

and THEN I named a kitty cat after a town in Mississippi: Magnolia.

Also had a cat named Pecan.

And a female canary (who sang!) named Birdlegs (after Birdlegs & Pauline).

TOP THAT!

:smack:

I also write in Tengwar, using my calligraphy skills - it’s a little esoteric, but I find it visually pleasing.

Wow… my nerd credentials don’t even measure up to many I’ve seen on this thread. (bows) There was a time in college when I stopped reading comic books and watching anime, but I started going to cons again after my first marriage began to fall apart, and want to get back into comic collecting now that I saw the Avengers movie. Oh, yeah, since I discovered slash, I can’t help but ship Cap/Iron Man now.:o

I’ve been watching anime since I was a toddler. (OK, so it was Speed Racer dubbed into Spanish, but still)
I love learning foreign languages. I took four years of high school French, and took equivalency tests worth two years of high school Spanish, earning me the foreign language medal when I graduated. Now I’m picking up a bit of German and Italian, mostly due to my falling into Hetalia fandom last year. (more on that later)
I learned to read when I was 3, and one of my most devastating experiences was leaving my book collection behind when my parents moved us to the States due to civil war in my country of origin. Now I guess I’m a book hoarder. I have a few hundred books, some I bought, and others left behind by my ex.
My daughter seems to be following in my footsteps - she owns many books and manga, and has been cosplaying since she was 7 and started drawing Pokemon fanart when she was 4 - very unskilled, but at least I could tell which one was Pikachu. I hope she can actually make some friends in middle school…

About my current Hetalia obsession: I found out about the anime a couple of years ago, and started reading the webcomics early last year. I now own all the episodes on DVD, as well as the Tokyopop translations of the first three volumes of the manga. I have cosplayed as the female version of Austria twice, and am planning my female Southern Italy (aka Romano) cosplay. My daughter accidentally found out about Hetalia when she came home early and found me watching the anime, and now she’s into it too. She cosplayed as Canada at the last con we attended, and everybody was going on about how cute she was. By the way, her social studies grade in school improved, and she was the only kid in her fifth-grade class who knew where Latvia was. As for me, I have begun reading about world history more, and learned more about other countries as a result.

My dog is named Luna, after Sailor Moon’s cat. The cat we own already had a name, so the new dog was the only available candidate for an anime name.

I realize this post pretty much kills my chances of ever remarrying. So be it. Still wish I could find a man willing to cosplay England from Hetalia, though… (sigh)

I listen to Rush (the band).

I once worked in a planetarium. Doesn’t get much nerdier than that.

We have ourselves a winner

Or you’re a furriner, and I was able to figure out DiffEQ but not the other one. What’s E&M, pretty please?

I study Gaeilge and Sean nos, just because I like them.

That doesn’t make you a nerd; that makes you awesome.

Reading this thread, I can’t tell you all how incredibly proud I am to be a member of this community.

As a kid, I could recite the Presidents in chronological order, forward and backward.

Electricity and magnetism.

Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw are the Hogwart’s houses of the Six Wives of Henry VIII.

Don’t judge me.

When I was about 4 years old (1982-1983) my family got a VCR. Shortly after this, Star Wars (IV) was on TV and someone in the family taped it. I remember watching that tape a lot, but I was surprised to find out a few years ago that I apparently watched it every day for about a year afterward. When my mom told me this, I said, “Well, that’s an exaggeration.” But she said no, I literally watched that tape every single day for about a year. I guess that explains a lot.

I’ve never been very good with math, but in my senior year in high school we were using graphing calculators for something to do with trigonometry. I somehow figured out that by adjusting some of the settings for graphing the sine or cosine of X, I could make the calculator draw 4 stars - one on each axis (including -X and -Y). I saved it as a program and would run it sometimes during class when I was bored.

I didn’t go on a date until I was 16. I didn’t kiss a guy until I was 20.

I have seen the musical “Phantom of the Opera” five times, and I own 6 different versions of the soundtrack. (Yes, the show is cheesy and it’s not high art, but I love it, dammit.)

I give a passing listen to the top 40 radio stations, but I much prefer music from the 40s-60s, with a special affinity of the standards by Porter/Gershwin/Berlin etc. My favorite singer is Frank Sinatra.

I IMed my husband to ask what was the nerdiest thing about me, and without hesitation, he wrote:

I suppose that’s true. The Star Wars prequels really piss me off, and not so much for the lack of quality, but for the lack of continuity with the original trilogy. I could go on for hours… Also sometimes I can’t sleep after watching a new Dr. Who episode because I will be wide awake thinking about the paradoxes and the wibbly-wobbley timey-wimey ball.
