What's the SD on Michael Moore?

Hi, I’m in England & have never seen Michael’s Moore’s documentaries. I read Stupid White Men and felt he was deliberately leaving out a lot of information, that it was pretty skewed.

Somone else said he was ‘convicted for lying’ but I’m not sure what they meant. What’s the Straight Dope?

I don’t know but I really wish someone would do a “Michael & Me” film to confront him on his utter hypocrisy. Multi-million dollar mansion in NYC, must have Evian water backstage–no other brand is acceptable–if he is to do a speech somewhere, complains about how much he gets paid and abuses the staff at these venues. Oh, and lies and exaggerates. His movies are still interesting though.

Don’t worry KidCharlemagne it will happen - some young up and comer will make a documentary exposing him. The young documentary maker will be offered other opportunities and become wealthy and then another generation of filmmakers (maybe Mike’s son) will expose the young documentary maker. It’s the circle of life man - Hollywood style.

He explains himself pretty well on his website:

whether you believe him or not.

Personally, I think he means well but is a bull in a china shop.

He’s Hate-America. What’s the proof? He is a multi-millionaire who tries to portray himself as an everyman. I have yet to see any proof that he has donated to any cause more money that he has accepted in the latest tax cuts. Are you worried about paying for your energy (light/heat) bill this month? guess what, Mikey ain’t helping your ass. Moore is a punk.

Just curious; suppose, for the sake of argument, he started as a poor everyman. Then, he manages to make a few million with with his work. What is supposed to do then, donate all his money to charity or retire from the public eye?

And please explain “He’s Hate-America”. Your words following that accusation support the assertation he’s a hypocrite, at most. How does he “hate America”?

He’s a sideshow.

This might not be a GQ post, but his “rich is evil, and poor is noble” act is soooo 1990’s.

He tries to portray himself as being an everyman. From his mansion he tries to portray himself as the comman man, just the same as anyone working in a factory or laying brick for another millionaire’s mansion. When he shows us he has refused any tax refund, I may afford him a modicum of respect. You see, tax refunds are voluntary. You don’t have to cash them. When Moore files his tax return, he can opt to forego his refund to the IRS.

I don’t get your point. While there are plenty of things you can criticize Michael Moore for, this has got to be the most petty. Besides, he has vowed to spend all of his extra money from the tax cut to defeat Bush.

Not exactly like he’s running out to buy a Porsche, or something.

BTW, I just figured He Hates America was his XFL name.

I’m curious about the “convicted of lying” part. Assuming that he’s not a convicted perjurer, I would take this to mean that he got sued for libel or slander and lost. Does anyone know of such a suit?

Does anyone have a credible cite to back up his bad treatment of staff, his evil doings, or anything that’s been said against him in this thread so far? If so, I’d like to see it.

As St. Urho pointed out, he’s donating his tax refund to defeat Bush.

Still waiting for you to show how he hates America. Please support this accusation, or admit it’s BS.

Here’s a site that does a pretty good job of explaining the inaccuracies in his movie Bowling for Columbine: http://bowlingfortruth.com/

MM strikes me as the perfect antidote to Ann Coulter. I think both do a major disservice to their causes. For example, I probably agree with most of AC’s position on the major issues, but she still disgusts me. She uses scare tactics, vilifying her political oppenents instead of arguing rationally. MM does the same thing, just from the other side.

One thing they both have in common is that they are making heaps of $$ off their common strategy. So maybe they are smarter than we give them credit for.

At least Michael Moore is funny. Ann Coulter is just plain bizarre.

And can I add my voice to the calls for the ‘anti-American’ shouters to explain their insult?

One of my bookmarks.

What GorillaMan and Kalhoun said.

KidCharlemagne, Duffer, aside from your obvious and intense hatred of him, do you have any facts that you can offer up that supports your position?

Hell, duffer said

Isn’t that something that could more accurately be said about George W Bush?

I’m actually surprised by two things here:

  1. That a message board devoted to dispelling ignorance isn’t totally tearing him to shreds.

  2. That the liberal majority of this board aren’t doing more to stand up for him.

My take on Michael Moore is that of a sensationalistic journalist, much like Geraldo Rivera. The connections that he makes are tenuous and, at worst, smell of a conspiracy theorist.

Example:

Dick Clark sold his name to someone who runs a chain of restaurants, which in turn employed a welfare mother, whose son was staying with an uncle, found a gun and shot and killed a classmate. So, Michael Moore assaults Dick Clark accusing him of being responsible for this little girl’s death. How is that relevant?

This thread is going off the rails, so I’ll just close it.

The only really factual question is whether Mr. Moore has been “convicted for lying”. This may be a misrepresentation of the fact that he has been sued for libel by James Nichols. As far as I know, the case has not gone to trial. ** flapcats**, if you wish further clarification of the “convicted for lying” question, you may start another GQ thread specifically about that.

A poll along the lines of “what do you think of Michael Moore?” would go in IMHO. Some posters here seem ignorant of the fact that debates about him or his methods or how he compares to famous political figures belong in GD. Rants as always go in the BBQ Pit.
