Love Bruce when he rocks… liked Nebraska … hated Tom Joad and Devils and Dust.
Actually like most bluegrass quite alot but haven’t heard much more than the commercial stuff like O Brother and Allison Krauss.
So… will I like the Seeger Sessions?

I haven’t heard all of it yet, but what I’ve heard has had me tappin’ my toes and bobbin’ my head, swayin’ in the chair, etc. Very upbeat. He’s coming to Des Moines in June, and I’ll go if I can get tickets.
I liked it a lot, but if you don’t, I would understand why.
As for me, I’m buying a mule and going to work on the Erie Canal.
I think I’d buy the mule after I got there otherwise it would be a slow trip from The Golden State.
I’ve heard raves from reviewers; what I’ve heard so far, I like.
But I’m a Springsteen fan; and enjoy the way he hasn’t stayed bound by the style of music that gave him his biggest commercial success. This kind of music, and the further exploration of Americana and its tarnished ideals is somehow appropriate for a man who is, can he be, oh, yes, 57…
I am a mild Springsteen fan, which is unusual for my neck of the woods. He is a beloved Idol in Monmouth County. I have seen him for free multiple times and enjoy his older stuff especially. I use to hang out at the Stone Pony a lot.
I am a member of Clearwater and a lifetime member of Monmouth County Friends of Clearwater. I have met Pete a few times now and I love his music.
I have really enjoyed the Songs I have heard from the Seeger Sessions so far. I will probably buy the CD.
Jim {I even visited the Erie Canal last Summer}
Yay for the SDMB–I just bought this CD! I heard a review of it on NPR and heard a few songs, so I went and purchased it.
I like folk and bluegrass music (when I hear it)–I love this CD. I am not a big Springsteen fan, but I like what he has done with these songs. Pay Me My Money Down is my current favorite.
There is a rawness and an exuberance to this CD that is infectious.
Downloaded it last week. It’s hit or miss, but the highlights are very good indeed. Most of the best songs are in a stretch right in the middle of the album: “O Mary Don’t You Weep,” “John Henry,” “Erie Canal” are great. Same with “My Oklahoma Home.” “Pay Me My Money Down” is good, too. The other songs are decent to good (“Jesse James,” “Mrs. McGrath”) or just don’t click, at least in my ears (the rest of the tunes). Beyond the songs themselves, the production is strong, and the musicianship is first rate. The album as a whole certainly is better than Tom Joad, though not as good as Devils and Dust.
I guess the real question is, can a fan be satisified with Bruce indulging his antiquarian tastes, or do you crave more of him expressing his own unique musical perspective rather than retreading stuff from the museum? Personally, I’d prefer more original work. But if you’re really a fan I don’t think you can pass it up. I’m glad I bought it.
I’ve only heard “Pay Me my Money Down,” but I intend to buy the CD very soon. I can’t believe he’s 57. I’m getting old. I remember lusting after his fine ass in the “Dancing in the Dark” video, back when I was a wee lass…
Saw the CMT special last night and liked it alot. Apart from the obvious outtakes…were the versions on the special the same as the final CD version?
