Boo hoo. We fight ignorance here. “Wally” was a thieving fraud.
Another vote to get rid of the putz smiley.

Dead people? I thought we were discussing Wally?
Boy, are YOU ever on the wrong message board. That attitude of yours is the antithesis of the very mantra of the SDMB and completely at odds with its stated mission.
I don’t know HeyHomie at all. I don’t know if there is a past history that makes you suspicious of his questions. I do know that with the threads that have come up lately concerning Wally and his Smiley, it looks to a bystander like you attacked **HeyHomie ** for little reason.
The Question of the mysterious or beloved Wally is interesting. It grabbed my attention to read this thread, (OK any shiny little thread catches my attention) and I appreciated the answers that came up.
Again, not know the history of **HeyHomie ** or Wally it looks like you overreacted to a fair and legitimate question and are accusing Homie of something frowned upon.
Maybe when you get a chance you can reread his posts and maybe consider apologizing to him. If you really gave him the benefit of the doubt you would have taken his posts at face value and never posted the above. In all honesty, as of right now you are only making yourself look bad in this thread.

Just include a delete :wally option in the smily voting and let the Dopers decide.
Look, I answered the question – more than once, and in quite a civil manner.
Apparently not to his satisfaction; in fact, it sounds a lot like he preferred to shoot the messenger because he didn’t like the answers he got.
It’s too bad that “Wally” – whoever the heck he might have been – didn’t live up to other people’s expectations here. It’s obvious some people really take that to heart. It’s also too bad these disappointed people can’t get face to face with who should be the real object of their agita – namely, “Wally” – and not the staff.

Let me try this again.

And I think it should be outright expunged from the SDMB, forever. IMO.
And here, I agree 100%. Not nessesarily because of Wally- I got no dog in that hunt, I only started lurking around the time he “left”, so I have little to say about the man. But, it’s useless. It can only be used in the PIT, and although AFAIK no one has been banned for using the :wally , I am pretty damn sure there has been a warning or two. So, lets depp-six that emoticon, and get a “yechh” emoticon, please?
I do want to point out that if someone died, their family could use that computer afterwards, no reason not to.
TubaDiva, maybe you should take you feeling to the pit.
<d&r>
Grrrr. “your feelings”
I’m appaulled by this attack on Wally. He has always been a legend to dopers and should remain so. What good comes from debunking him? Nada! Does it matter that most dopers don’t remember him? Nope! I am not grateful to the person who told me that George Washington didn’t chop down a cherry tree and I’m not interested in all the revelations revealed in this thread. Get a life that doesn’t involve gossiping about dead people. :wally
…this is the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and going lalalalalalalalalalalala…

Absolutely. As I said, it doesn’t prove anything. It does, perhaps, raise doubts. And that’s what the OP is asking–Why do people doubt that WallyM7 really died? Because there are people on this board–many people, I would guess–who do have doubts.
I don’t think it’s an unreasonable question at all. Perhaps TubaDiva is reading things into the question that I’m just not seeing, but I’m confused by the reaction, myself.

It’s that time of the year.

Ooooo, I love it when Tuba gets all bossy.
Good christ!
Who said Christ is good? Is that a good Christ, to take away poor little Wally Dignam? He’s a bloody ruffian, I say, to take away poor little Wally Dignam.

Wait. You’re sitting there obviously attempting (and failing) to conceal your irritability on this subject, and his saying “sorry I brought it up” constitutes “shooting the messenger?” Would you please go locate some objectivity? He’s nowhere near “shooting the messenger.”
And before anyone says anything, I’d like to apologize if my message was too confrontational for ATMB. The strangely harsh tone of the thread made me think it was in the Pit.
“Wally” is a tough subject for a lot of people.
The staff gets quizzed about it on a regular basis, sometimes by people who weren’t around when all that happened (it was a long time ago), sometimes by people who want to drag up old fights/start new ones.
The staff is often positioned between people who feel that we have shielded/protected someone who was dishonest and unworthy and an equally large group of people who feel that anything negative said about Wally is slandering a dead man and how could we be so cruel? The staff gets it coming and going.
With all this swirling around, it’s a easy subject to be testy about on all fronts. There’s been a lot of fistfights over Wally’s cold internet corpse and doubtless more to come. Wally, still dead after all these years.
Homie, if you thought I was being mean to you, I am sorry; that was not my intention, not the first time, not the second, not now. I’m sorry if you thought I was being unfair to Wally or to you; again, that’s not my intention.
Even with the best of intentions, sometimes I can come off like a putz. Most of all that was not my intention.
Who or what Wally was will likely never be totally answered, we have no real way to know. What little we do know does not reflect well on him and his choices. It’s difficult to reconcile the persona loved and respected by many with what we have here and it hurts a lot of people to even talk about it. I’m sad for them and wish this story had a better ending.
Please don’t let this keep you - or anyone else - from asking a question when you want information. That’s the purpose of this forum and it’s our job as staffers to try to get you that information the best way we can.
TubaDiva
His daughter joined the board a short while before the incident. She said hello and got welcomed, flirted with etc. A jokey ‘leave me daughter’ alone thread was started by Wally IIRC. Then she came in and told us he had died.
Close. “She” posted a thread announcing his “accident.” That thread has since been deleted. At least it no longer shows up on a “Search,” and as quirky as that function might be with text, it’s been pretty reliable with user names. The announcement of his “death” was made by an Administrator Emeritus, based on a call, I believe from a SDMB member who had received an email from “Amy” (the daughter character). That thread has also been long deleted.
At the time, I think pretty much everybody accepted it as fact. You also have to accept the evidence is pretty thin. As I’ve said before, the evidence for Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster and a gunman on the Grassy Knoll having existed is far more compelling than the evidence of Wally’s death.

Which might be another reason to get rid of the “Wally” smiley. As I recall, a number of questions about Wally are based on people wondering about the smiley. No smiley, fewer questions. The thing’s more of a nuisance than it’s worth.
