I don’t know the whole story, and I may be missing something, but what about The Flying Lizards?… I’ve listen some of their “covers” (they seem just making covers), but they’re terribly awful. The lead singer seems to do her job lacking any emotion or voice inflections, and all the background voices and musicians are frequently out of synchronization…

But they’ve featured in some known average films like Empire Records and The Wedding Singer, so that leds me think that the band may be deliberately bad, for unknown purposes. Am I right?
The Flying Lizards (if it’s the 70s group I’m thinking of) were notable because they recorded their singles on a ridiculously low budget (IIRC, “Money” cost $50 to record) in a single take on cheap equipment.
Their renditions of older songs were meant to be ironic and minimalistic – important qualities in the New Wave at the time. It’s certainly supposed to sound like the lead singer is bored with everything. It is, ultimately, meant to be a joke, and “Money” is just plain hilarious.
Now ask me about the Anemic Boyfriend, another group of the same period that was even funnier.

Ok. What about the Anemic Boyfriend?

I LOVE the flying lizards: bored, german voice intoning:

The best James Brown cover ever, ever, ever.
And trust me, Biffy knows.
I mean about the Anemic Boyfriends. The had one New Wave semi-hit, “Guys Are Not Proud.” Truly strange and hilarious song.
