IMDB lists the John Carter of Mars (former working title Princess of Mars) movie as “in production” and due to be released in 2006. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401729/ Beyond that, we haven’t heard much about it. Rotten Tomatoes says only that John Favreau landed the director slot, and that was back in October. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/comments/?entryid=248581 Which makes a 2006 release date seem optimistic. Does anybody know anything about the status of the project?
After a swap of a Director like that, there will be script rewrites, new pre-production art and designs and decisions to make… and then, really it’s only been two months, as they will be taking time off right now.
So you can’t expect any news for quite a while. Perhaps check around again in six months time?
Yeah, I guess you’re right . . . sure hope it’s worth waiting for, and not another Sky Captain . . .

I would LIKE to think they could do a decent job of it, but they’re clearly thinking family film, which means the Princess is gonna dress like Princess Naboo, not Slave Leia (as in most of the pulp art that accompanies the John Carter of Mars stories). So I’m kinda dffident about it. I’d like to see it done and done well, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen.
And the sex scenes should involve laying eggs.
(Note green smiley)
Green smiley or not, I’m not sure I get your point. Egg-laying women would be novel indeed, but once again, not for a family film. Not unless they handled it very … I’m not even sure there’s a word for how they should handle it … I just don’t think “tastefully” can apply here.
That pretty well sums it up. Your basic Burroughs fan will expect nekkid, egg laying green women and he’s gonna get them in long robes attended by Jedi knights with metal swords.
Well, when you think about it, Burroughs did write his novels for a juvenile audience and there is nothing risque in them. When Tarzan gets Jane alone, all he does is kiss her. But then, a near-naked Deja Thoris would not be at all inconsistent with that, in an age when any child can see similar sights at any beach.
