What's up with Liza Minelli's face?

I saw a few clips of the Michael Jackson tribute “concert”. They showed a short clip of Liza Minelli signing “Over the Rainbow”

Let me say up front that I can not, at all, tolerate Liza Minelli. I can’t stand to look at her, hear her talk, or (shudder) listen to her “sing”. Her unexpected appearance on TV makes me grab the remote and frantically flail on it until the TV does something, anything, other than show me Liza.

I needed to plainly make that point so you will believe me when I say that I can spot Liza and change channels within milliseconds. I refuse watch her or listen to her.

(I know people will disagree with me. You’re entitled to your opinion, but please don’t debate that here. This thread is not about whether or not Liza is talented, it’s about her face.)

However, when they showed the clip from the MJ tribute, I was hit with a morbid fascination: I couldn’t keep my eyes of the woman singing ‘Rainbow’! It wasn’t because she was attractive, it was because it wasn’t Liza.

I knew it was ‘Rainbow’, I knew that’s Liza’s (excuse me, Judy’s) signature song, but the lady singing it looked nothing like Liza! Nothing!

I did not recognize her, and please consider my opinion (above) to understand how unlikely that is.

So… what’s up with her face? Plastic surgery? Just exactly how much???

That being said, I hope there wasn’t some tragic reason (illness, accident, etc.) which required her to get her face rearranged. If that’s the case then I will feel properly ashamed for raising this question.

Anyone have some before & after pics?

IIRC, she’s been in poor health the past few years. Not surprising, since she’s never quite taken good care of herself.

Thanks Javamaven1. She looked decidedly “puffy”, which can be the result of lots of things (one of which definitely being the understatement you supplied).

However, she didn’t just look like a puffy Liza (not even ‘fat Liza’). She DID NOT look like Liza. It was downright spooky.

When does the video come out?

Liza has had some serious health problems (including encephalitis) and has gained a good deal of weight. She does look considerably different than in her prime.

Some of the immediate effects of encephalitis are paralysis on one side of the body, slurred speech and drooping facial muscles (per an article on E-Online). She’s also had multiple hip replacement surgeries, and been in and out of rehab over the years. She certainly hasn’t had it easy.

That said, I know exactly where you’re coming from Jimbrowksi. I have an instinctual, animal-like hatred of Liza. Even the name Lye-zuh makes my eyelids twitch.

Regretably, I feel a sort of fatal kinship with her, being as we share the same birthday.

Now that the MJ special has been aired, anyone have any comment?

Thanks for the word on encephalitis and its effects.
In addition to looking bad, I thought LM sounded like she’d had a stroke.

I taped the special for my kids, thinking it might give them some idea f some of the music I grew up with. They kept asking, Is THAT Michael Jackson? Why does he look like a girl? And why is he white? Why would anyone do that?

In a short while resorted to simply answering all of their questions with, “He’s basically just a major freak.”

It was fun to see the Jacksons together. Everything else was worthless. And enough with the fan blowing up already.

I was unlucky enough to see quite a bit of this program while channel-hopping on a VERY BAD night.

I agree she looked remarkably changed. Sadder than that, her voice was awful. Out-of-control vibrato and the long-held notes seemed to flatten and then correct. It seemed cruel to watch her so exposed, so “lively” and so dead-looking.

This appearance should not have taken place.
