The Smartie thing still confuses me. In the US they are little fruit flavored tart things that crumble to a powder when eaten. In Canada I gather they are akin to M&Ms?
Am I the only one who is concerned about the shells?? The shells!! I know we all mourn the tan M&M’s, but must our beloved chocolate candies now be shellacked as well? I swear the M&M’s are shinier than usual!
I know, because last winter I moonlighted at the M&M factory. I was hired (along with a couple hundred other people) to suck the color off the yellow, orange and green M&Ms until they turned white. (You can’t do that with the brown ones, by the time you suck all the brown off 'em, the remaining shell is so thin that it becomes translucent.)
Some people seem to think there’s something wrong with that, but I can’t see why. We were all screened for herpes, so it’s perfectly safe.
heresiarch, that reminds me of that old joke about the kid visiting his grandma in the hospital, and eating her bowl of nuts while she’s sleeping, then her waking up to tell him how she likes to suck the chocolate off them, but can’t eat the nuts anymore. Hee.
Smarties–yum not the sweetart like bain of all Halloween bags, but the chocolate kind. Again, I only saw them on Halloween. They were like M & Ms but smaller and spherical rather than pill shaped. They were packed in a little cellophane tube that contained about 10 of them and the shell was slightly harder than that of M & Ms. The chocolate was FAR superior to that of M & Ms, and it was really cool to let them get hot–like leaving them in the car, cutting off one end of the celophane and squishing them up into your mouth like astronaut food. Again…YUM. Wish I could find some.
I did not know that, and I’m glad I do now. I think I’m gonna order Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Brown (weeping all the while for Tan) and make my own earthtone 70’s mix. The mix they should have preserved forever, including the Tan of course. Damn kids.
I was just reading in the local paper over the weekend that Wyclef Jean and pop singer Ashanti will announce the newest color on June 19th. So I guess we’ll know then.
Out of all the terrifying things that are in M&M’s, you are worried about the possibility of additional extraneous shellac? Maybe it’s just time for new glasses. Although who knows, it’s been months since I bought a pack, so I’ve been woefully out of the loop.
The day they cut out the green ones, though, will be the day my childhood dies. Or at least my high school years of teasing friends over the significance of eating the green ones.
Black M&M’s? That seems so…wrong. More wrong than white ones…at least to me. In the world of candy, black is reserved strictly for licorice flavored items, NO EXCEPTIONS! That is how the candy world warns of of the evil licorice. Sheesh.
Halloween M&Ms are orange and black, and Valentine’s Day bags have red, pink and white. You could just pick up some of each near the appropriate holiday and pick out the monochrome ones - that is, if you don’t mind little hearts and ghosts instead of "m"s.
