What's up with Steorn's "Orbo" (free-energy perpetual-motion promises)?

They said that they would not accept investors until the jury process is complete. Whether that has changed I don’t know. If not, you have to wonder where they’re getting the cash to spend on stuff like this latest stunt.

I want one.

This whole thing is hilarious. Without having created perpetual motion, they’ve at least created semi-perpetual commotion.

And if anyone is having trouble reading this post, I apologize. We are experiencing some technical difficulties. Our initial assessment indicates that this is probably due to the intense heat from your unholy gaze. We have commenced a technical assessment and will provide an update later today.

Oddly enough, the third picture on that link you gave is on the front page of Steorn’s Orbo site.

OK, by now I believe it’s a sociology experiment… and the group that’s being studied is the posters on their forum; I’d suggest a title like ‘Dealing with the loss of belief: a case study’… up to now, I’ve seen rationalization, rage, claims that the ‘truth’ will be revealed to the ‘true believers’, and, yes, even the ever so popular government suppression/sabotage…
Plus, they’ve now started discussing planes on treadmills…

*Oh, please. Please. Don’t let them discover our site. Please. *

There was a report at The Post.IE from about this time last year that they had raised previously 3 million Euros.

I doubt that the increase in the price of a barrel of oil has caused their “tubes” to use up all of their reserves. I could probably build the same contraption for under $100. US, by going to Home Depot here in the States

This just in from the near future:

Dear Investors,

As you know, our latest ground-braking, earth-shattering, sceptic-confounding demonstration did not quite go to plan.
Although there were a satisfying number of you stalwart financial supporters (plus quite a few press) present at the exciting occasion, our completely reliable free-energy machine did not actually achieve all its objectives.
Actually it didn’t quite achieve any :smack: - but we know what happened!
Last time, as you know, the lights were simply too hot. Fortunately a further cash injection into the business cured that tiny hiccup. However this time another unexpected flaw revealed itself.
One investor was heard to say “I’m having second thoughts. I don’t think this will work.”
Of course this meant that our wonderful machine was very upset and decided not to perform. A completely understandable reaction.
So our next wonderful display of this incredible machine will involve no pessimists. Unbelievers will be barred. And that means that your satisfaction is guaranteed!

Best regards,
Rip Off-Artist

P.S. Please fill in the enclosed form and attach a further payment to cover minor but essential expenses. You are so lucky to be in on the ground floor…

Hmm the SDMB was down for a little while this afternoon…

Could it be? … Could it have been…?

…the lights?

Is there a webcam pointed at the hamsters?

Yeah, what you do is approach each of the potential investors in turn, privately, and say:
Psst, I know we said we wouldn’t accept investors until the jury stage was complete, but I like you a lot, so I’m going to let you in to a special deal right now, - this must remain a secret between you and me, you understand, because the other potential investors will be really jealous, because I’m going to make them wait. You won’t tell anyone I made this special deal with you, will you?

Yes, here.

I agree with this sentiment but when I read that they had built the sucker the night before, I went from smelling rat financially to smelling something along the lines of a show.

If they had anything at all that was legit, or even a decent fake perpetual motion device, it would have been up and tested and running in the display location days or weeks before it was time to show the world.

Built it yesterday, I ask? Built it yesterday??!!

And then there is their putative reasone for why it failed…bad (replaceable) bearings and/or hot lights? These turnip-based life-forms are unable to even make up a plausible excuse. They are so amateurish I find no plausible explanation outside of performance art.

But hey, maybe they are that stupid and maybe there are that many gullible people, as mentioned upthread.

geez guys! It only works when you don’t observe it! It’s really shy…

I think it means the scam has already been perpetrated, and the marks have already been separated from their cash, we’ve just yet to learn the details.

Is this factual, or just an off-the-cuff jab? If true, can you give a cite, please? (Since Chief Pedant is taking your statement to mean that you actually read this somewhere; I had assumed you were making a joke.)

On a side note, a few people have mentioned the “jury” which is allegedly checking out Orbo before they allow investors.

There is no “jury.” That’s fiction, too. Yes, I know they SAY they selected a jury, but you’ll note they’ve released no names that make up this alleged jury. There’s no really good reason not to say who’s on the jury. I’ll happily plonk down $20 that the “jury of twelve top scientists” chosen to independently verify Orbo does not exist and never did.

Oh, I’m quite sure the marks have already ponied up the bucks. Judging from the remarkable faith some people have in this sort of thing I bet they still have a few lined up for the fleecing.

What make no sense to me is why they’ve opened themselves up to so much scrutiny. Isn’t that what scammers like to avoid? I just can’t add it up. The only thing that makes sense to me would be if they were to use it as some kind of platform to make a speech about energy scarcity, but then why would they have accepted all that money?

They’re stupid?

I had also come across this statement on my own…

From the July 4 post at 4:06 here:

*"I was just chatting to Sean a couple of minutes ago and he asked me to pass on the following :

A test unit which was built yesterday in Kinetica, in the temporary lab we have set up. Once we had signed off on the final magnetic configurations we went to transfer this magnetic config to the display unit & casing on the exhibition floor.

Here they ran into some technical issues, firstly a problem with the bearings, which was fixed once identified. The next issue appears to be an environmental issue. We think possibly the temperature from the lighting system in the immediate area, but this has to be further assessed in the morning.

The current plan of action is to have a technical meeting in the morning and we will update you from there - we are planning to turn on the web streaming by lunch time so we can give you an ongoing update on progress (and you can see some stressed Engineers working in real-time, if it is not fixed by then!)

The demo will go ahead as soon as we fix the small outstanding issues.

Please except our apologies on this and we will update you first thing in the morning.

Kind regards,

SeamusF"*

That’s just what they want you to think.

Of course, we know that, and they know we know. So they should probably go into hiding.

Except they know we would expect that, so if they go into hiding, then we’ll know they know we know.

So they need to do a public demo.

Y’know?
