What's up with the Clear fluid in yogurt? Good or bad for you?

The clear liquid on top of yogurt when you first open it, I think it’s the whey. Is that good for you or not? Sometimes I mix it in if there is not copious amounts of it, other times I drain it…

Can it harm me, I guess is the question I am asking? I know it’s not salmonella, but I have heard that. Myth?

Anyone know the dope on yogurt liquid?

Stir it up and you won’t see it. Then eat it and enjoy. Good for you.

Dairy products separate sometimes. If you open some yogurt and the liquid is not there, the yogurt probably just has more in the way of thickeners and stabilizers. The liquid is there, just mixed thoroughly. Even if you can’t see it, there’s no difference in what you’re eating.

It’s called whey. Given that this is part of the Dannon FAQ, you’re probably not the only one who has wondered.

That’s what is technically known as “the goodness”. Or so my mother told me. Now eat it up or you’ll have it cold for breakfast.

You can stir it back in.

On the other hand, line a strainer with cheesecloth and dump in the yogurt to drain overnight, and you’ve got yogurt cheese. It’s like cream cheese, but with a lot less fat. Good stuff!
