When I’m watching videos on my youTube feed, I come across videos, often video shorts, that use this particular AI voice all the freakin’ time.
What’s the deal with this particular voice-- is it supposed to emulate a certain person’s voice, or is it just a default voice that one of the major AI apps use? To me it sounds kind of like, but not exactly, old radio broadcaster Paul Harvey. Not at all sure that’s who it’s supposed to be, though.
Someone suggested it sounded like the guy who does the Historical Blindess podcast, and, I don’t think that’s deliberate but I could see how it could have been designed to evoke that particular kind of podcast voice, which is perhaps our modern equivalent of a radio voice. Formally, it’s ElevenLabs’s voice “Adam,” which I assume is popular either because it’s been cloned or because ElevenLabs is cheap to begin with.
I just use it as an immediate sign that whatever YouTube has decided to shove at me is AI-generated slop and I should skip it immediately.
Hmm, maybe it’s meant to evoke the voice, or the ‘modern equivalent of a radio voice’ in general as you say, but it doesn’t sound to me too much like the ‘Historical Blindness’ guy’s voice.
Ah, thanks!
Agreed, though I have sort of a horrified perverse fascination with all the AI-generated video content slop out there, so I watch more of it than I should, albeit mostly only when it’s a short.
I knew which voice it was going to be before I even listened to the clip. I, too, hear it everywhere, though I was never sure whether it was AI, or just a voice actor who would record anything you wanted as long as the check cleared.
It’s not just in YouTube videos. I’ve heard in in actual television commercials–admittedly very cheap-ass ones–for an app where you can buy generic Viagra or Cialis. “Adam” sounds very excited to be able to buy knock-off Viagra at such a low price!
