What's with all the fundies on SDMB?

Hey, how come there are a disproportionately high amount of strident christians and fundamentalists on SDMB? I seem to recall seeing some item about an old flamewar between SDMB and some other message board, and religion had something to do with it, but I didn’t catch the whole backstory. Care to fill me in, or is this one of the skeletons in the closet that nobody wants to discuss?

Tell us what planet you’re getting your data from and we’ll tell you why we’re here.

And yo! Tim Groth and Mike Friedman, if you’re reading this, your GHF Message Board still won’t let me log in or post reply. If you want to “build up a large community”, you gotta activate people’s accounts. Or fix the bug. Or something.

I have sent Mike 2 e-mails about this so far. Nobody home? Give up on the whole thing? Final exams week? Or what?

Chas.E., for a quick summary of the flamewar, check out SDMB goes empirialistic!.

Then, if you’re really interested in the entire saga, check out this monster thread: For David B, the good Doctor and others who are knowledgable about Creation debate, which has over 700 postings.

WTF are you talking about. There seems to be a shortage of “fundies” on the SDMB.

Thanks Piper, the summary was sufficient to answer my question. I guess there must still be quite a few holdovers from the LBMB.

What Fundies? We had a few in GD for awhile (FriendofGod, Jenkinsfan) but they are gone now. Who’s left? Wildest Bill? Eh, he hardly even posts anymore… I can only think of one or two active (using the term loosely) Fundamentalists off the top of my head.

It might seem like we have a disproportionate amount of fundies, or homosexuals, or liberals, or conservatives, or third-party supporters, or whatnot, but I suspect that we’ve got a pretty good cross-section. It’s just that folks are more vocal about it here. Thinking about my co-workers, for instance, with most of them, I have no clue what their religion, or sexual orientation, or political affiliation is. On the boards, however, it’s hard not to know, for most folks.

This is probably also why we seem to have disproportionately few minority ethnic groups here: If you meet someone face to face, it’s usually hard not to know what their skin color is, but here, I mostly don’t know what anyone looks like beyond what I’ve seen on the People Pages.

But we seem really short on three-toed sloths at the moment.

Nah, I’m still here.

Anyway…

I don’t think we have a whole lot of “Fundies” running around the Boards, really. I guess it depends on how you mean “Fundamentalist”… I mean, if you want to see fundamentalism in completely innocuous posts, that’s your call, of course.

I think you’ll be happy to know that I am not a fundamentalist.

I am an ACC trained killer and fervent Devil worshipper. I take pleasure in the widespread death of Communists and morons, and the routine moron Communist.

So, hopefully, my gun-totin, beer drinkin’, bad-ass self can help outweigh the gravity of “fundies” you feel are here. If not, let me know how I can help!

well now…theres some pretty fun e’s and f’s also…

Hey, Duck, did you get my email of a couple days ago? Your account should be working now - I’m working on fixing the DB problem, too.

It’s all a part of my plan, Chas.E. This is just Phase I.

Be afraid, Chas.E. Be very afraid.

I’ve seen the term “atheist fundie” used and I suspect that we may have some of these on the board. Would they get counted along with the “christian fundies”? or separately?

Not again.

I’ve been over this and over this in GD. The definition of atheist, as opposed to agnostic and nihilist, has spawned debates that are like angry rats with four left feet: They go around in circles angrily and end up going nowhere.

I won’t even try to fight the battle here. It’s best left to GD or, failing that, The Pit.

Now, now, Derleth! I’ve been in a few of those debates.

They don’t resolve the question to everyone’s satisfaction. But I doubt strongly that anyone expected Great Debates to do what Socrates, Aquinas, Kant, Maimonides, Averroes, Kung-Fu-, Lao-, and Mo-Tse, and Mahavira were unable to accomplish. They do lead to consciousness raising on the part of those able to read the opposition’s views, and they do generate some useful and well-discussed hijacks.

oops…sorry

I believe God created man and nature in 6 literal days.
I don’t believe some of the laws of the old testament are valid today(no offense to the Jewish believers who do),
So am I a fundie?
(I Can’t be; I voted for Nader…)

“Fundie” is more a definition of attitude than belief, IMHO. Fundies are generally obnoxious, prostheletyzing, mal-adjusted and socially incompotent zealots, as opposed to plain old normal religious people who mind their own bidness.
