What's with all the misspellings?

Is it just me or is the SDMB starting to look like the rest of the web? I think of SDMB as an oasis in the sea of spelling errors and dropped words. But now … :frowning:

I dno’t use Firefxo.

Dosen’t it have an automattic spelchecker?

I would like to offer my apologies . I’m as much to blame as anyone . I hope it’s not too upsetting though.

It’s not any one person, just a general trend I’ve noticed.

Always one in every crowd

Well that’s why I apologized . Look, I’m not offended but to be honest sometimes I believe the content of my posts are of more value than going slow enough to make sure it’s spelled correctly. I will downlaod a spell checker tommarow. I wanted to mention it before some one showed up and threw me under the bus. I have been berated over it a couple of times today alone.

… Well apparently we are becoming more like the rest of the web with people nitpicking silly things.

If you can understand what the person is saying and it’s clear the typo is a typo and not someone who doesn’t know how to spell “thsi” or teh" then what does it matter? Really?

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Czary.

When I first joined there were posters who would jump all over someone if they made a spelling error. This, in my opinion, made people think before hitting that Submit button.

Now, no one calls people out on it specifically. Of course now there is also the edit button, giving you a sense of “I don’t need to proofread this”.

Well that’s a shame considering it was only 7 months ago . I quess I haven’t been paying attention at all .

That’s actually a myth. Mixing up important letters within the word will still screw you up. I read that somewhere on here, with an example that was incomprehensible.

I am not trying to be snarky, but I honestly don’t know what you’re saying here. Do you really think there are people who don’t know how to spell “the” or “this”? It’s clear that those are just typos, right? Is it somehow less forgivable to make a typo on a word like “the” than on a longer one?

It’s always been my opinion (an opinion which seems to be shared by many on this board) that not taking the time to make sure that your posts are spelled and punctuated correctly indicates a lack of effort and lowers the general level of discourse. Obviously, people make mistakes from time to time, but they should make an effort to minimize them.

Yeah, I know. It just seemed like an appropriate attempt at humor.

My humor sucks. I’m going home now.

Um, belay that. I’m already at home.

Actually, I’m seeing more word substitution or homonym errors than true spelling errors: their/there/they’re, loose/lose, home/hone, and so on.

Then there are the occasional “I’m not making a typo, I’m just outright guessing” errors like using “per say” for per se.

You know, stuff that spell checking doesn’t catch.

I am a poor typist but a grammar and spelling nerd, so these errors bother me. That also makes me a prime candidate for Gaudere’s law. I still make an occasional typo, but I hope I’m holding my word choice errors and grammatical blunders to a minimum. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sailboat

I’m just not a good enough proof reader (is that one word or two?)

Should I have put a period after the close of the parenthesis?

So many potential errors, so little time.

Their are two errors in this sentence.

This sentence no verb.

Misspelling: it puts the ‘O’ in “genius.”

Not to pick on you specifically Omegaman, but, no. A good thought will still be good after you’ve taken the time to make sure you’ve communicated it clearly. A bad thought is even more worth spending a few minutes with. It gives you time to reconsider.

No one is perfect, and I don’t think anyone *expects * perfection. I’m certain that a search of my posts would show myriad spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. Probably a whole bunch of typos as well, and I’m an exceptionally good typist.

But IMO, if *you * don’t care enough about the content of your post to spend an extra few moments writing it well, I can’t imagine why I should care enough to spend an extra few moments trying to decipher it.

 Or it gets the hose?
