What's with all the mulit-colored dust these days?

Eh, YMMV. But it’s the only explanation I can think of for why a centuries-old tradition suddenly in the last couple of years is every cinematographer’s favorite thing to put on TV. There’s a commercial out right now for a DSLR camera. It shows a few half-second examples of the amazing HD video it can shoot, and guess what one of the clips is.

The corporate hipster mullet, IBM business beige in the front, multicolored dust party in the back!

CMC fnord!

I can’t find exactly what that dust is made from, or why it’s (apparently) so much fun to run through it.

I’m pretty sure it’s made from cornstarch and food coloring.

Getting home without staining the inside of your vehicle has to be fun (not).

I was at an Indian market yesterday, and saw some packets of brightly colored powder, labeled “For Religious Use Only”. I wondered what ceremony it was for.

It’s just powdered paint. Like this.

And I think the idea is you wear white clothes, and running through clouds of the dust “paints” your outfit in a unique and colourful way, giving you a souvenir of your run.
