Like in this thread? Not to pick on kanicbird, but there seems to be a rash of multi-posts timed several minutes apart this afternoon. I think I remember seeing one thread where a back to back posts were multiposted 3 times.
What’s going on? Has anyone checked the hamsters’ shots lately?
What seems to be happening is that the board loads your reply, but then isn’t serving you the new version of the page. (Or at least that’s what’s happening to me.) So I click the post button, there’s a lag, and some time later I get the “Error loading page” message. So then I click back, see that my post is stll there in the reply box where I typed it, and click the post button again. But the board got my post the first time, even though it didn’t tell me, so that creates a dupe.
I had a double post earlier today, and I didn’t do any double clicking, or going back, or anything like that. I just hit “Submit,” it took forever and a day to respond, and my post was there twice.
I found that if after I hit “submit” there was a long wait, if I stopped the page loading, then hit preview and scrolled down, my post was already there. I’d then back out by hitting my SDMB link button.
I avoided timing out and double posts.
I wonder if someone’s forgotten to feed the hamsters? I tried to get in about three or four hours ago, and I just kept getting page timeouts and ‘page cannot be displayed’ errors.
If you compose a thread and hit post and it doesn’t go through because browser errors out with a “no response from server after xxx minute attempt” —
a) if your composed post is not showing on-screen, go back, i.e., hit the back button on your browser.
b) scroll to the top of the page, where it shows the forum name and the thread name, directly under the gold-on-rusty-red “FIGHTING IGNORANCE” BANNER.
c) right-click or control-click on the little folder just to the left of the thread title. Should look like this. Select an option that lets you open the link to the thread in a new window or tab while leaving the current window or tab undisturbed. The specific wording will differ from one browser to another but nearly all modern browsers will have an option that lets you do this. NOTE: This attempt to load the page a 2nd time may fail with a similar error message. Repeat as necessary until you get the $#@ page to load again.
d) After the new window/tab of the same page loads, check it to see if your post did, in fact, go through. In my experience, 85% of the time you’ll see your post did indeed go through, but the confirmation didn’t get back to your browser in time.
e) If, and only if, the window/tab loads and you check it and find that no, your post did not go through, go back to the original copy of the thread-page (the one that still has your clever post in the compose post box) and click the “Post” button again to prompt another try.
It was just like Smeghead’s experience: I punched “Submit Reply” once, and the board just kept grinding away. After about a minute I pushed the “Stop Loading” button on my browser and went back to the GQ main page - voila - three different threads.
I see a kindly mod has locked two of them and they’re gradually sinking into oblivion.
