what's worse than being sick?

Finding out you’re sick because of this I think I speak for all those affected when I say “ewwwwwww”

Here is my favorite line in the whole article…

“One dissection took place in the Andersen cafeteria, and the table was not disinfected immediately afterward.”

Somehow, the words “dissection” , “cafeteria” and “table” do not go together…

I haven’t been feeling well, but I swear to god I wasn’t there!

Oh, poor cousin!

Note: this thread does not intend to cast aspersions upon any owl poster of the sdmb.

(unfortunately this line was omitted in the original… )

What’s worse than being sick? My son being sick! And from something preventable. And from something at school.

Oh grody!!! Especially due to the fact that I did that too, in 7th grade. Now I find out that school teachers really are trying to kill me. Sigh. I’m never touching anything that came from an animal in school again. Sure, that pellet thing was four years ago…still…::nervously checks self::

Animal poop does not belong in the classroom. Repeat ad nauseum. (Alright I know someone’s gonna nitpick and say its not really excrement, but still, it’s not exactly fun.)

Zoggie - the ‘pellet’ is merely regurgitation. There are professionally-prepared science kits, like this or this. Fumigated, heated and sterilized. Put together your own mouse, rat or vole.

(Droppings, on the other hand [ewwww!], are liquid or semi-liquid. Why these were brought in, I have no clue.)

If they took pellets and droppings from the birds at the center, then that was ignorance and bad judgment on someone’s part. Teachers call us for pellets, and this is exactly the reason we do not give them out.

[sidenote - having done some off-site programs with the birds from out center, I can attest we take a LOT of precautions, including drop cloths (with an osprey, several, since they tend to “launch”), gloves, cleaning equipment, and never letting the kids touch or get near the live birds. We do have taxidermied animals (usually ones that have been seized from unlicensed individuals) and feathers, but these are kept seperately from the ‘ambassador birds’.

Just for the record, the birds taken to offsite programs are ones that can never be re-released because of physical injury (unable to catch their own food or fly), or having been imprinted on humans (unable to relate to their own species). Many of these birds also foster orphaned chicks of the same species and provide company for recuperating juvenile and adult birds.]

wring - contact me off board about the Paul Revere and the Raiders ‘oldies’ concert I mentioned in a different thread. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
