THE BAND PLAYED ON
1895
Words by John F. Palmer Music by Charles E. Ward
Verse 1
MATT CA-SEY FORMED A SO-CIAL CLUB THAT BEAT THE TOWN FOR STYLE,
AND HIRE-D FOR A MEET-ING PLACE A HALL.
WHEN PAY-DAY CAME A-ROUND EACH WEEK THEY GREASED THE FLOOR WITH WAX.
AND DANCED WITH NOISE AND VIG-OR AT THE BALL,
EACH SAT-UR-DAY YOU’D SEE THEM DRESSED UP IN SUN-DAY CLOTHES,
EACH LAD WOULD HAVE HIS SWEET-HEART BY HIS SIDE.
WHEN CA-SEY LED THE FIRST GRAND MARCH, THEY ALL WOULD FALL IN LINE,
BE-HIND THE MAN WHO WAS THEIR JOY AND PRIDE. FOR _ _
Verse 2
SUCH KISS-ING IN THE COR-NER AND SUCH WHISP'-RING IN THE HALL,
AND TELL-ING TALES OF LOVE BE-HIND THE STAIRS.
AS CA-SEY WAS THE FA-VOR-ITE AND HE THAT RAN THE BALL.
OF KISS-ING AND LOVE - MAK-ING DID HIS SHARE,
AT TWELVE O-CLOCK EX-ACT-LY THEY ALL WOULD FALL IN LINE,
THEN MARCH DOWN TO THE DIN-ING HALL AND EAT.
BUT CA-SEY WOULD NOT JOIN THEM AL-THOUGH EV’-RY THING WAS FINE,
BUT HE STAYED UP-STAIRS AND EX-ER-CISE HIS FEET. FOR _ _
Verse 3
NOW WHEN THE DANCE WAS O-VER AND THE BAND PLAYED HOME SWEET HOME,
THEY PLAYED A TUNE AT CA-SEY’S OWN RE-QUEST.
HE THANK’D THEM VER-Y KIND-LY FOR THE FA-VORS THEY HAD SHOWN.
THEN HE’D WALTZ ONCE WITH THE GIRL THAT HE LOVED BEST.
MOST ALL THE FRIENDS ARE MAR-RIED THAT CA-SEY USED TO KNOW,
AND CA-SEY TOO HAS TAK-EN A WIFE.
THE BLONDE HE USED TO WALTZ AND GLIDE WITH ON THE BALL ROOM FLOOR,
IS HAP-PY MISS IS CA-SEY NOW FOR LIFE. FOR _ _
Chorus
CA-SEY WOULD WALTZ WITH A STRAW-BER-RY BLONDE,
AND THE BAND PLAYED ON.
HE’D GLIDE CROSS THE FLOOR WITH THE GIRL HE A-DOR’D,
AND THE BAND PLAYED ON,
BUT HIS BRAIN WAS SO LOAD-ED IT NEAR-LY EX-PLOD-ED,
THE POOR GIRL WOULD SHAKE WITH A-LARM.
HE’D NE’ER LEAVE THE GIRL WITH THE STRAW-BER-RY CURLS,
AND THE BAND PLAYED ON
Aw, cmkeller, you brought back memories. I did my ballet grand finale to that Starship song…I still get emotional when I hear it.
I second Elvis and REM. Beautiful songs.
Also…
Feels Like Home, Bonnie Raitt. I am so grateful she is being elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. She deserves it. Wonderful Tonight, Eric Clapton. A classic.
Makes me Whole, Amel Larrieux. This is one of the most beautiful songs everm period. Just bought the CD, this song is the last one and I wasn’t expecting it. Made me cry.
Now and Forever, Richard Marx. Beautiful song, what else can I say? I know it has a certain cheesy 80’s factor, but it stands apart because of the simplicity of the lyrics and the beauty of the melody.
“Any Time at All” by T-Bone Burnett. A friend almost used it as her wedding vow.
I don’t want to free you or to please or need you
I only want to know you watch you grow and hold you
No moment is too short no obstacle too tall
I pledge to you my love forever isn’t any time at all
I don’t want to save you rescue or enslave you
I only want to hear you consider and be near you
No sorrow is too big no feeling is too small
I pledge to you my love forever isn’t any time at all
I don’t want to hurt you abandon or desert you
I only want to love you be true to and think of you
We walk the razor’s edge our backs against the wall
I pledge to you my love forever isn’t any time at all
There are so many amazing songs form the 60’s and 70’s… but for romantic lyrics, I’m actually gonna have to go with Garbage’s “#1 Crush”:
I would die for you
I would die for you
I’ve been dying just to feel you by my side
To know that you’re mine
I would cry for you
I would cry for you
I will wash away your pain with all my tears
And drown your fear
I will pray for you
I will pray for you
I will sell my soul for something pure and true
Someone like you
See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time that I’m talking
You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored
I will burn for you
Feel pain for you
I will twist the knife and bleed my aching heart
And tear it apart
I will lie for you
Beg and steal for you
I will crawl on hands and knees until you see
You’re just like me
Violate all the love that I’m missing
Throw away all the pain that I’m living
You will believe in me
And I can never be ignored
I would die for you
I would kill for you
I would steal for you
I’d do time for you
I will wait for you
I’d make room for you
I’d sink ships for you
To be close to you
To be part of you
Cause I believe in you
I believe in you
I would die for you
