My comfort food (as in fetal position, need my mommy, social shell-shocked) is Malt-O-Meal. Prepared with milk, dab of butter, hint of salt and a spray of sugar.
Served hot with much cooing and pledges to keep the world at bay. Now THAT’s comfort, baby.
These are my comfort foods…not necessarily all at the same time.

Aw thanks, people! I had to reread this post before I do the grocery shopping. Still the middle of hurricane season, might as well pick up some extra stuff.
Gee, Cat, I think this was discussed recently among the celery (private joke between me & Catrandom).
And hey, nobody knocks my Kraft mac ‘n’ chese! Cooked slightly past al dente, with a little extra milk, eaten from a big bowl with a big spoon. And unadulterated – nothing goes in that didn’t come out of the box, besides milk & butter. Several of my college friends say they got sick of it during that era, but not me. I used to like to make it in the morning when I’d come home from an especially long night on 3rd shift – I call it “brainless food” because I can just about make it in my sleep. It’s warm and filling and delicious. For extra indulgence pour a nice cold Coke over ice to go with it. Fill tummy. Then curl up on the couch with pillow & blankie for a nice nap.
my ideal comfort food is a plate of beignets from the Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, but I can’t get them unless I’m within driving distance of New Orleans, so they don’t really count.
If i’m upset about something and can’t call my friends to talk about it, I can end up downing an entire carton of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream.
mmmmmm.

Shepard’s Pie, but only the way my mom taught me to make it plus a few changes I do.
onions with garlic, lightly sauted in olive oil
1 pound lean ground beef, browned with onions and garlic
1 can tomato soup
various herbs – thyme, basil, oregano, lemon pepper (whatever suits my fancy)
1 can french cut green beans, drained
(blend together in a casserole dish)
top with mashed potatoes in an even layer (about 1 1/2 - 2 cups – real mashed taters preferred)
sprinkle a buttload of shredded chedder cheese on top
put in 350 - 375 degree oven for about 25-35 minutes (put foil on the rack below as it can bubble over)
that should be 1/2 medium sized onion finely chopped and 1 -2 garlic cloves finely chopped or put through a garlic press (depends on your garlic tolerance)
Either a) pancakes with peanut butter and syrup, or b) toast with peanut butter and syrup. Ah, shaddup, it’s a family tradition where I come from. Also, any variety of chocolate, usually fudge, brownies, or in any of these their ice cream form (Phish Food is awesome!).
For just pleasant indulgence:
Chips and salsa. Seriously, it’s an entire meal for me!
For when I’m sick:
Mac n’ Cheese
Tomato Soup with saltines
Those little chocolate pies that usually sell for 4 for a dollar, and an ice cold Coca-Cola to wash them down. The ideal way to consume these is to be curled up on the couch with a blankie, a kitty, and a copy of the Weekly World News. I find the WWN cheers me up by either giving me something to giggle at and/or by reminding me that there are people even more pathetic than me (ie, the people eating cheap chocolate pies and not giggling but rather nodding their heads sagely and saying, “I knew that.”).
One of my favorites just makes me think of growing up, home, and all that good warm touchy feely stuff. Unfortunately you just can’t get it in Colorado. If you are from the New York / New Jersey area you might have heard of Taylor Ham. You serve it hot. A Taylor Ham sandwich on a Kaiser Roll, for breakfast… Man, now I’m sad. Now I need the comfort food!
