Had a tasty baked mac and cheese for lunch- the kind with the crumbly top- and started thinking about the best comfort foods- the ones you turn to after stress, turmoil or severe hangover.
For me its Mac and Cheese, Peanut Butter Sandwhichs and big old subway roast beef subs with all the crap they got loaded on.
#1 I would have to put mashed potatoes here. No skin or lumps, and with butter and salt. NO gravy. I never really understood the whole gravy thing anyway. All it does is make it turn light brown and taste like gizzards.
#2 Biscuits and Gravy. Here is where the gravy is permissible. The biscuits have to be buttermilk (no Grands - Paul Bunyan-sized monstrosities), and there has to be sausage.
Comfort foods when I’m sick: Chicken Soup with Kreplach, French Toast, mac and cheese.
Comfort foods to lift my spirits: Crab Meat au Gratin, Veal Saltimbocca, Flourless Chocolate Cake (especially the stuff I had this Saturday - OMG, it should be called Chocolate Orgasm Cake), Kung Pao Chicken, Aurelio’s Pizza… too numerous to mention.
Ludo - gravy made with a real roux doesn’t taste like gizzards. I don’t like gizzards gravy, either. Good gravy on creamed mashed potatoes happens to be heaven.
My favorite comfort food, though, has to be crackers and milk in the biggest glass I can get a hold of. (My father’s a redneck).
Peanut butter and jelly is right up, too, along with grilled cheese sandwiches.
CREAMED PEAS
Mashed Potatoes (with fried-chicken-gravy)
Scalloped Potatoes
Meatloaf
I LOVE MY MOM! haha Most of this stuff only tastes good to me if it is me or her who makes it. haha
Shepherd’s Pie
Any type of stew
Pierogi
Stuffed Cabbage Leaves
Stuffed Kohlrabi
Stuffed Green Peppers
Notice a pattern?
Mashed Potatoes with garlic and horseradish
I have to agree with Homebrew. Add some fresh-shelled purple hull peas and maybe a little blackberry cobbler with ice cream for dessert and we’re talkin’ beyond comfort…this is nirvana.
