rec.roller-coaster (and right now seems to be my only source of information about the Holiday World accident).
I used to read alt.fan.cecil-adams before I switched to SDMB. The SDMB has a more friendly atmosphere, no doubt thanks to the hard work of the moderators and administrators.
The only group I read these days is alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent, which beats all web-based message boards on the topic. UseNet is still useful for very specialized areas of interest like this.

The first one deals with the art of writing interactive fiction games - a more aesthetic version of the second newsgroup, which deals with the games themselves - hints, previews, competitions, et cetera.
