“Pressure” by Billy Joel. I’m not really sure why it’s my favorite song; maybe because it reminds me of my life at times. Also, some of the lines in it remind me of one of my favorite movies.
And We Danced - Hooters.
From Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song & Dance: The London production;s “When You Want to Fall in Love,” which became Broadway’s “Unexpected Song” with the same melody, but different lyrics. This song makes a lovely duet. When I sent a Russian relative the CD and mentioned that, she translated both versions into Russian, did a duet with her husband, and mailed me a CDR. One of my most favorite ALW songs!
This is one of those things that changes constantly for me - at this very moment, it’s “Numb” by Will Brett. It’s just a beautiful song all around. You can download it on that site… hint hint
Most of the songs by The Sneaker Pimps on their album “Becoming X”; Stay Free and Guns of Brixton by The Clash; a lot of Smashing Pumpkins songs (like Here is No Why, the song my username came from)… this is too hard
(also, this is my first time posting on the new board, and it’s taking a lot of willpower to not make the whole post my favorite color…)
Nanny!!!
My goodness, I am not alone. OK, when will you be in or around Amsterdam? There’s a beer with your name on it.
I can’t think of a single all-time favorite, but some prennial crowd-pleasers (for a crowd of me) are:
Happy When it Rains - The Jesus and Mary Chain (slightly edging out Just Like Honey and Sidewalkin’)
Driver 8 - R.E.M.
Nemesis - Shriekback
Left of Center - Suzanne Vega & Joe Jackson
Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants
A Day in the Life - The Beatles
The Peanut seller - Stan Kenton, play this real loud.
Every time we say goodbye - Ella Fitgerald, to hit the notes this accurately and change key take real talent.
As time goes by - written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931 but sung by just about everyone, the lyrics are brilliant, subtle and true.
Every night - Paul McCartney & Wings
She’s gone - Hall & Oates
Mannish boy - Muddy Waters
I feel good - James Brown
Squeeze box - The Who
Night moves - Bob Seger
The living years - Mike & the mechanics
I feel free - Cream
Without you - Badfinger, the true story behind this song is heartbreaking and utterly tragic.
Dreaming tree - Dave Matthews band
Currently, my favorite songs are as follows:
-
John Prine- Hello In There
-
Johnny Cash’s cover of One
-
Parliament-Funkadelic -Get up for the Down Stroke
-
Nick Drake- Which Will
-
Tool- Bottom
-
Lyle Lovett- LA County
Of course, these will change at a moment’s notice.
I have so many favorite songs, how do I pick just one? It might be “Sign on the Window” by Bob Dylan. It’s just a little ditty, far from his major opus, but it opens up a real down-home vein of timeless Americana that just gets you right here, you know?
Or it might be “Voices of My People” by Kate Price, which taps into a deep tribal vibe of ancient, timeless world humanity. It’s a mystical experience. I think Kate Price is the most excellent songlady that no one’s ever heard of.
Or maybe “Roots and Wings” by Sheila Chandra; I like all of her songs and just picked out this one as a representative sample. It’s a fascinating densely textured multilayered blend of Indian rhythms.
I love everything by Vas too, and one good song representative of their sound is “Sunyata”; you just trance out on their vibration of timeless rhythm and beautiful voice. Perfectly blissful.
Or my favorite song might well be “Mirrors” by Sally Oldfield, which is the brightest, lightest, sweetest, sparklingest song ever recorded about the inner essence of love. Can’t top that one.
Something by Loreena McKennitt would be a good candidate for my favorite song, too, like “Dante’s Prayer” or “The Mystic’s Dream”, blissful spirit songs that just take my soul right up to Heaven.
(Can you tell I mostly like women artists?)
Pearl of the Quarter by Steely Dan
“Kangaroo” by Big Star.
I keep a list of my favorite songs, about 70 of them - I’ll spare you, and just mention:
More than a Feeling - Boston
Rhiannon -Fleetwood Mac
Promises in the Dark - Pat Benatar
Love Stinks - J. Geils Band
Moving this to Cafe Society.
When they’re playing, dozens of tunes are “my favorite song,” but if I had to abstractly name two, they’d have to be Brown Sugar and Gimme Shelter. The songs just move, man.
“Vincent” by Don McLean.
Just cause he sang about one of my fav. painters and it’s sooooooo sentimental;)
Yay ** plnnr* love that one. *
Weezer - Only in Dreams
You can’t resist her.
She’s in your bones.
She is your marrow, and your ride home.
You can’t avoid her.
She’s in the air.
[in the air]
And in between molecules of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.
Only in dreams, you’ll see what it means.
Reach out our hands.
Hold on to hers.
But when we wake, it’s all been erased.
And so it seems… only in dreams.
You walk up to her.
Ask her to dance.
She says ‘Hey baby, I just might take a chance.’
You say its a good thing.
That you float in the air.
[in the air.]
Up where there’s no way I will crush
Your pretty toenails into a thousand pieces.
Only in dreams, you’ll see what it means.
Reach out our hands.
Hold on to hers.
But when we wake, it’s all been erased.
And so it seems… only in dreams.
Only in dreams.
Only in dreams.
Only in dreams!
Only in dreams!
Only in dreams!
Only in dreams.
GOD I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
Cepter , I too am a “musicologist”. It would be impossible for me to name my favorite song. Music is such a complex animal, I don’t see how you can rank songs if you listen to lots of different kinds of music like I do. Here are some of my absolute favorites…
Led Zeppelin—Whole Lotta Love : This song just ROCKS OUT. The riff just gives me the chills x 10. Of course ahem I am a little partial to the zep (see handle).
Weezer—Say It Ain’t So
Feel Like Makin’ Love : I love this song and I can’t remember who it’s by!
Pink Floyd—Wish You Were Here
Jimmy Eat World—For Me This Is Heaven
The Outfield—For Your Love : I am so embarrassed that I like this song…it so eighties and cheesy, but c’mon…“Josey’s on a vacation far away/Come around and talk it over”.
Bryan Adams—Everything I Do, I Do It For You : sniffle
I Only Have Eyes For You : By far one of the best, if not the best, love songs of all time. I plan on having this as “first dance as a married couple” song someday.
The Beatles—Hey Jude
Train—Drops of Jupiter : Can you imagine no love, pride, deep fried chicken?
I’m listening to it right now:
Rufus Wainwright, April Fools, from his self-titled debut album, with the chorus
And you will believe in love
And all that it’s supposed to be
Yes, you will believe in love
It’s the greatest Brian Wilson burst of sunlight he never wrote for the Beach Boys. It’s the grooviest Sonny & Cher number they never recorded. It’s the ultimate Patridge Family song. Exhilirating five-part pop vocal harmonies that Phil Spector would cry for.
These days, it’s ** Miami 2017** by Billy Joel…but, it varies.

Alltime-No-doubt-about-it Favorite-Song EVER!!!:
Don Henley: The Boys Of Summer
I can remember being in my high school auditorium working on the set for one of our shows and “Summer” came on and EVERYBODY there sang the “Out on the road today, I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac” line, (Except me :smack: :smack: :smack: :wally :wally ) and then Molly Gimmel gave me this look and said, “Everybody sings that line.”
It was the song that was on the 1st time I had sex, with the afore-mentioned Miss Gimmel.
It just gives me that feeling of being in one of those crappy mid-fall days where it’s cold and rainy and a lot of the leaves are off the trees, and you think back to the past summer.
Which is pretty much what the song is about, I guess.:smack:
Anyway:
