38%. I wasn’t surprised that I did poorly, because my knowledge is mostly concentrated in a few areas that don’t include sports or film, and I have better (or at least more fun) things to do than look up statistics all day.
I stopped at question 5, I believe, “What will the world’s biggest city be in 20 years?” I don’t know and neither do they. Fortune telling isn’t the same as knowledge.
I don’t even want to click on it after seeing a sample in the latest Newsweek. I think one of the questions was along the lines of “What’s the color of the woman’s face in a painting I’ve never heard of: Red, blue, yellow, or green?” What the hell does that have to do with anything?
RickJay, that was in Newsweek as well. I believe I had about the same reaction.
I’ll give anyone who actually finished that ball-buster of a quiz 75% just for that, and further, I will give anyone who gave up and went and did something slightly more useful (like cleaning out their belly button) a 95% for having some sense.
I persisted through it. My comments are much the same as others. The technical design of it sucked. Who designs something like that for a 130 question quiz? Obviously Newsweek does, but jeez.
The substantive content of the quiz was very American focused, and trivially oriented at that. Why is it relevant which American Presidential candidate does not have children? In every topic area, the questions were heavily weighted in their US based focus.
The disclaimer on the front page says a lot:
“Editor’s Note: The initial version of the global literacy quiz published Sunday, June 24 contained several inaccuracies, which have since been corrected. NEWSWEEK regrets the errors, and we are grateful to our readers for catching them.”
Yes, this quiz was done with a lot of care. (Read in sarcasm here)
featherlou, yes I did finish it interspersed with other things. It reduced the pain, if not my stupid persistence.
I gave up after six questions, and a 2% rating. First off, the questions seemed to flip-flop between actual issues that I think are worth knowing, and utter inanity. But worse the requirement to load a new flash for each question was just too damned annoying.
I got 60 percent right, but a lot of them were just lucky guesses.
They correctly explain that evolution isn’t random, but mutations are.
Far too American-centric.
And you’re wrong. I recently watched a documentary about this practice, bewildered. I had not paid attention to the beginning of the documentary, so I couldn’t tell if it’s widespread or only done in a couple places, but it’s true. Worse : they use the implanted chip for payments. The cattle… I mean the VIPs… have an account at the place, and the staff scan their arms with something looking like a barcode reader when they order something
:dubious:
The happy patrons apparently find all this very convenient…
46%–I guess that’s not too horrible, considering I already know that I am severely lacking in the art/music/film knowledge. I did manage to rock it out in science and literature… so I know what I know and I don’t know what I don’t know, which only makes sense, ya?
Count me as someone else who stopped part-way through because this quiz has little to do with “global.”
To the people who keep saying it’s not global:
They don’t mean pertaining to the whole world. They mean it’s about a bunch of different subjects. Religion, sports, art, etc.
I got a 45%. I got every religion question right which is kind of odd since I’m an atheist.
I think some of the questions were a bit screwy. The one about which rap artist went all the way to the Supreme Court might be wrong. They said it was 2 Live Crew, but I couldn’t find anything on them going to court because of sampling, they went over their “obsene” lyrics.
I got 41% and felt pretty lucky to get that. Global? Ok, possibly global in that it covered a range of topics but almost all the questions required specific US knowlege.
Possibly a “fair” American test but most non Americans would have no clue about many of the questions. I know I quessed lots!
Hmmm. I guess it all depends what your definition of “is” is then, dunnit…
58%.
Some of the U.S. politics-centric questions really brought my score down.
As virtually all my knowledge of U.S. politics comes from this board, I blame you guys. Shame on you, Dopers!
48%. I finished it but only because I’m stubborn. What a tedious, timewasting exercise it was.
I read an article about this in the Economist recently. It said that a club in Barcelona started offering this service, but only a very few patrons had actually taken them up on it. Let me see if I can find the article.
From Wireless incorporated (I expect you have to have a subscription to read it, but maybe not.)
So yeah, doesn’t exactly sound “popular”. I call BS on this question, along with a number of others.
52%. What a dumb quiz.
