What's your most / least favorite Disney movie?

 Sorry I don’t like a bunch of overrated movies that look like ass, are way too long, and bore the living shit out of me. I guess I’m just a freak who should crawl back under a rock.

[:Peaks at Wikipedia:. How the hell was Wall-E only 96 minutes? I swear I watched that movie for over 4 hours before it put me to sleep, and when I woke up the next day it was only halfway over.]

Ugh, I forgot that one. It’s a good contender for my least favorite. It was just so boring. I like my Disney movies with cute animals and plots.

If we’re not actually confining it to animated movies, though (the OP didn’t actually say), I’d say Mary Poppins. It’s just the most brilliant movie for kids ever.

*Fantasia *is the best movie to watch when you have the flu and are feverish. No plot, and you’re halfway hallucinating on your medicine anyway, and when it’s over you can just start it up again. Fell asleep? No problem!

For sentimental value: Sleeping Beauty. I love it for the animation and music. It’s a gorgeous film with a fantastic villain. Though the heroine is a bit insipid she doesn’t have a big part anyway. The music is Tchaikovsky’s ballet and therefore could not be better. I’ve loved this one since I was a little girl and always felt sad my kids won’t watch it because Maleficent was too scary for them. :frowning:

I love Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, and several others.

Least favorite: Cinderella. While it does hold up to repeat viewings, it does not hold up against the power of multiple little girls and their inevitable 4 year old obsession with it. (They could have been watching Sleeping Beauty!) oh and Pinocchio and Fox and the Hound. Both are great substitutes for Unisom.

That’s one of my favorites. I’m a sucker for that sort of thing. Though I can understand why a lot of people don’t like it. (My father-in-law says it has forever ruined Beethoven’s Symphony #6 for him.)

I saw it when I was little in the 1980’s and thought it was amazing. The feeling of it has stuck with me and might even have contributed to my love of south american litterature in adult age. However, I don’t really remember much of it and have been wary to see it again in case it’s not what I remember it to be.

Well, I was just kidding about the name-calling, but you have to admit you’re espousing an uncommon opinion. To each their own, of course.

Anyways, I know this is also an unusual opinion, but I’ve always liked Rescuers Down Under. I think it’s better than the first Rescuers, and has some really nice 3D integrated in it. I wouldn’t class it in my top 10, but it deserves more respect than most other Disney straight-to-video sequels.

Least: 101 Dalmations. One joke film. Yeah, we get it. Lots o lil doggies. All spotted.

BO-RING!

Best: The Incredibles

Oh, Brother Bear . . . oh . . . so bad. SO so very, very bad. Almost Dreamworks bad. The guards at Abu Ghraib refused to show it to the prisoners for humanitarian reasons. True story.

Snow White stars the most vapid, insipid “heroine” in all of cinema, animated or un. She drifts through the story like a soggy bag tossed into a stream. She never engages; she never happens: she only gets happened to. The only character in that film who has any obstacles to overcome or decisions to make is the stepmother. She’s the real focus of that story. The story is about the queen’s fear of aging and of losing her husband’s love as she ages; Snow White is a minor character in the queen’s story. She has no story of her own.

If you haven’t read the book, I encourage you to do so. Very interesting depiction of postwar England, and truly sweet.

I don’t disagree with any of that, and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the film at all.

It’s hard for me to come up with a most/least favorite. If nothing else, I haven’t seen many of them in years and years. I do have a most over/underrated, thought.

Most overrated: The Lion King. Maybe it was because it came right after the wonderful troika of Mermaid, Beast, Alladin, and maybe it was because it started out so promisingly, but it was just cliched, predictable, and full of forgettable generic music. (I just can’t wait to be king?). And yet somehow it’s many people’s favorite (and won the poll last time there was one here on the SDMB, iirc).

Most underrated: Fantasia 2000. Gorgeous, funny, thoroughly entertaining. One of the segments is a whiff (Beethoven’s 5th), but the rest are all at least good, and three of them (Carnival of the Animals, Firebird and Rhapsody) are absolute home runs. Seems to have faded entirely out of people’s consciousness.

Don’t know if you remember this thread, but I thought I’d throw it out there again (though, obviously, we don’t necessarily agree on that film’s strengths).

Best: Fantasia 2000/Emperor’s New Groove.

Yeah, I know, but these two really hit the opposite ends of the Disney spectrum. The Emperor’s New Groove manages to be highly funny, with a compelling story, a noticeable lack of romance and music–overall, it hits well on the Comedy front. Each scene transitions well into the next, never lagging past the joke longer than necessary, and yet (I personally found) the inner conflict of Kuzco was still somewhat touching. Also, the ‘giant trampoline’ was a wonderful subversion of the classic ‘death by dramatic fall’ idea.

Fantasia 2000, on the other hand, is full of music, and hits both romance and tragedy very well. The movie flows, even though each piece is self contained. The firebird (I thought) managed to be genuinely scary, and that sequence is a perfect ending to the emotional ups and downs as a whole. The Drama, always present, is deepened by the music, which always manages to be connected well–something lacking in many other music videos I watch.

Really, these movies represent the perfect Comedy/Drama endpoints for family-friendly 2-D animation.

Worst: Hercules

Firstly, they screw up every single part of the mythology. All of it! There’s even parts where they try to do an image gag based on the mythology, except it doesn’t work because they got it wrong. Furthermore, Herc himself has an annoying personality; his angst about his parents and wanting to fit in never seemed compelling. Hades was a good villian, but Meg, the Fates, and the Titans were dry, boring and bland. Bleh. It’s not even that good visually–we were shortchanged out of a lot (via silhouettes, 2 montages, etc.), and the stuff that was there had way too many visual accents to be engaging. Definitely the worst (animated) Disney movie I’ve seen.

Peter Pan. The idea of remaining child-like AND flying – irresistible to me. Second: Alice in Wonderland. I always thought that “Alice” was under-appreciated and underrated. The skill involved in the animation – Alice’s various encounters with strange beings and especially her experiences with the Queen of Hearts…masterful.

Favorites (purposely leaving out Pixar films): Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aladdin, Emperor’s New Groove.

(One of my favorite songs from any Disney animated movie is “Hellfire” from Hunchback. Pretty daring stuff for a Disney movie. Love it!)

Least favorites: Don’t even know where to start. There are a lot of Disney films I don’t like very much, particularly anything that focuses on the Disney characters (Mickey, Donald, Pluto, etc.) For modern stuff, I disliked Hercules.

Meg? Meg?! The sassy, not exactly a heroine who gets perhaps the best not-quite-a-love-song “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” ever! (From Disney at least).

Oh, well… to each their own. :stuck_out_tongue:

On the other hand…at least they’re so bad they’re good. Whereas Disney live action stuff is now tReNdY tEeNyBoPpEr crap.

I’m so happy to see others list The Emperor’s New Groove as a favorite. I totally agree. I watched my copy so many times I had to replace the DVD, literally. It is just the perfect little animated feature.

*Favorites: *

Animated: The Emperor’s New Groove, The Incredibles, and Robin Hood.

Live Action: The Parent Trap (original), Summer Magic, That Darn Cat (original), The Shaggy DA, and all the Dexter Riley movies. That Darn Cat! is my absolute favorite though.

Musical: Mary Poppins.

Shorts: The entire Donald Duck catalog, with Modern Inventions as my favorite.

I’m really surprised to see so few mentions of live actions here, Disney is not just animation.

Least Favorite: Not sure really. There are many that don’t really capture my imagination. Jungle Book maybe, something about it just bothers me.
